So a funny thing happened a few weeks ago....

I finally managed to find a used Sigma 500/4.5 for sale, in the Netherlands. After a few phone calls exchanged with the seller we were pretty much agreed on the price, I was only waiting for pics of the lens to confirm my intention, an had said that much to him. I had a friend in Amsterdam on standby to take delivery of the lens , and in order to be able to commit to the purchase I emailed a couple of forum members who had inquired about the FA*600, with an offer that, if accepted, allowed me to make the trade at the level I wanted.
I immediately found a taker, we sealed the deal..... and the next day I got a call from the seller telling me he had changed his mind and was keeping the lens after all (I suspect I got gazumped, but nevermind)

This was just the push I needed to go look elsewhere - it was the only 500/4.5 that I had managed to find in over a year, and I didn't fancy my chances of ever completing the trade I originally intended after such an experience.
So I still sold the lens, and I'm now sitting on the cash waiting to find a stabilised Nikon or Canon 500/4, or even better an OS version of Sigma's 500mm if they ever update it.

Merde! Ce n'est pas bon à lire. Le Canon et Nikon objectifs sont très chers...
Bonne courage!

Yes, they are even slightly more expensive than the FA*600/4, but at least they are for sale quite frequently, and the fact that Canikon updates their long lenses from time to time tends to push the price of the older versions down. There are alternatives too, in the meantime, that are at least as good and possibly better than the Sigma 300/2.8 + 2x TC combo I had so far, like the 120-300 OS with 2x TC (reputedly better than the older 300mm prime, and with which I'll benefit from in-lens stabilisation; because the K-5 can't "read" the Sigma 2x TC, SR wasn't effective and I had to switch it off). I also narrowly missed a 300/2.8 VR for 2.500€, which could have been a nice combo with the 1.7II TC .

And a whole new world of LBA opportunities opens up, too....

@nicholas1970i if you've sold the lens, you should probably mark it as sold, unless I misunderstood what you were saying.

In any event, good luck with your quest for the 500/4.5
