I bought this lens by mistake once, thinking it was the 540, and when I was ready to return it, a professional portrait photographer friend of mine showed me how he used it in his studio. It is now one of my best flashes for digital slrs. I have the 360 and this 500, plus one of those $50 Bower, they all work remote control as slaves. If you already have a 360, this would be a good companion (you will have to set it manually because, but that is what we used to do before slrs and ttls anyway).

What are the limitations of this unit compared with the newer AF 540 FGZ
using it with newest DSLRs, like K5 or K20 ?

Regards.

One obvious limitation is lack of P-TTL capability. Perhaps have to set both camera and flash in M mode.

I use the 500 as a slave, the control is the camera flash, the master is the 360 and the two slaves are the 500 and the cheap Bower. The Bower is uses for background lighting, the 360 main front side, and the 500 on the other side. The only thing I have to do to the 500 is set it up manually to full power, half, 1/4 etc. The Bower too, but the Bower is so weak that at full blast produces the background/hair lighting I need. It is a trial an error process that has to be done with the model sitting. It takes three or four shots to do it right the first time.

I do not think so, but I have not really experimented that much. I do very little studio portrait.
