Item Description
I bought this lens some time ago to check out the hype around the legendary Tokina build quality. This lens is the second version of the 28-70 AT-X Pro with the bayonet hood (vs the screw-in hood). I believe the lens is a constant f/2.8 in the Japanese market compared to the 2.6-2.8 for export versions, but they are basically the same lens. The lens doesn't change length when you zoom in or out because the moving bits actually move in the fixed outer barrel. A pretty neat design.

The lens is in excellent condition, perfect optics, and the only physical wear is some very slight wear just under the 3 prongs that mount the lens hood. When the hood is mounted it's a total non-issue, and barely noticeable when the hood is off. Also there is a small rub on the barrel coating that you can see in the photo.

I'm selling this lens even though the build quality is far better than my Tamron 17-50, because the focal length range just doesn't suit my shooting style, and I'm always wishing it could go a bit wider. If you're looking for a tank-like solid lens for walkabout or portraits, I'm sure you'll be very happy with this lens.

Lens hood, front and rear lens caps included. I'll also include an aftermarket Canon 24-70 hood, which I modified to fit this lens, but unfortunately, the corners vignette quite badly at 28mm. If you want it I can pack it, otherwise it's gonna go into the trash. The lens looks mean and professional with that hood though

PM me if you're interested!

In case I was not clear, the lens is not going into the trash.. it's the Canon 24-70 lens hood that I tried to modify to fit this lens.

If I may, how did you draw the conclusion "F2.8 and F2.6-2.8 are basically the same lens"?
As far as reviews go, F2.6-2.8 is a superior lens and I concur since I owned both in Canon mount.

NIKON GLASS: Tokina AT-X Pro 28-70mm f/2.6-2.8

If you scroll all the way down to the bit about the update, it talks about the special Japan f/2.8 versions. This lens came directly to me from an eBay seller in Japan.

Note that this lens I have is not the first generation 28-70mm f/2.8 with yellow ring and 72mm filter, nor is it the inferior 28-70mm f/2.8 SV either. Did you own these lenses back then, or did you own the f/2.8 Pro II that I have here?

I've never physically seen the f/2.6-2.8 version before so I can't say for sure, but from the photos I've seen online, this lens here looks exactly the same as those except for the aperture figure.

I know which f/2.6-2.8 you're talking about, but what's the f/2.8 constant that you are comparing it to in your personal experience?

FYI your f/2.6-2.8 is/was the slightly earlier version which had a stock screw-in hood rather than the stock bayonet hood.

I always wanted to have this version, but I actually found the first at-x 28-70 f2.8 to be excellent already... I guess it really depends on the copy you get... both are quality glass though, bump for the excellent lens.

I find this lens intriguing, but am confused a bit about the version. In a quick and dirty search, I've found some reviews/images of the 2.6/2.8 lens, but none for the straight 2.8 you have listed here.

Do you have an images taken with this lens so I can make some of my own conclusions?

I haven't shot with this lens much because I have a bunch of other lenses (primes and zooms) in its range. I'll take the lens out tomorrow and shoot some photos with it.

Here are a couple of photos from a recent shoot I did with the lens.. More to come!
