Sigma APO 100-300mm/4 EX DG

PentaxForums.com Marketplace Listing

Item for Sale
Sigma APO 100-300/4 EX DG

Asking Price
$985

Item Location
Los Angeles, CA (United States)

Item Description
I bought the lens two weeks ago from KEH to add zoom versatility to my weekend hikes. The lens is in very good condition; still bearing KEH EX-condition rated tag (see below).

For the full disclosure there is a flaw. The lens is slightly decentered (see image #2). To me it is not a big deal if you shoot not flat real life 3D targets.

It is almost on par with my FA*300/4.5+Tamron 1.4X Pz-AF combo when the Sigma APO 1.4X EX TC is attached. The last image shows what this lens is capable of when it is paired with Sigma APO 1.4X EX TC. The image is shot from 25ft in Live View AF at ISO800 and then cropped from 4928x3264 pixels size to 2926x1950 pixels (then both were compressed, of course).

Actually I did not need it at all, but couldn't resist to try this legendary lens when I saw it at KEH, hoping that it would be as good as my FA*300/4.5, but more versatile. Unfortunately there is no miracle, and it's a pound heavier and a bit bulkier for travel. And on the shorter end I have my wonderful DA*60-250/4.

You may ask about my credentials. I'm new here, but I have a long history in DPR forum (almost 1800 posts and 255 participated challenges). Recently I sold privately another Sigma 100-300/4 EX (non DG version) to DPR forum member in Australia. I received it a bit crippled from eBay, fixed it, but found it softer than I expected. You can see some info here: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-slr-lens-discussion/164595-faulty-...-300-4-ex.html
I have a perfect buyer's record on eBay (Greyser257), but never sold anything over there. Iím more buyer type guy than a seller .

I may trade it for something decent like Sigma 180/3.5 Macro (plus some money, of course) or better than FA*300/4.5 long telephoto solution (400-500mm). So, if you have something really unique for trade, donít hesitate to PM me.

P.S. There is another interesting thing about the lens. My iPhoto shows the lens as Sigma 70-200/2.8 in EXIF for some reason.

P.P.S. I decided to keep it for sale for one week. If nobody wants it, I will return it to KEH. If you desperately are looking for the Sigma 100-300/4 and are OK with mild decentering there is your opportunity to have it. The lens will go for $985 plus PayPal fees and shipping.

ok, as a techno dunce, how exactly would the "decentering" manifest itself in field shooting? sports action and informal portraits, for example, which would be my main two interests in this lens. does it make one side of the image less sharp or detailed than the other? (i'm not sure what the charts posted are actually telling me).

edit: also, you'd have to be willing to ship to Australia.

I didn't shoot it in the field, just decided that I don't need it (my FA*300/4.5 +1.4X is still superior). Just Google up "lens de-centering". I did it yesterday. The main answer is: it may not really noticeable in real life. I may shoot some pictures outside on the weekend. Tell me what subject do you want to see: brick wall, trees, some street shots, etc.- and at what focal lengths
Australia is OK. I recently sold one to Australia (see my OP). The USPS insured shipping was $65.

I doubt that the lens is decentered enough to cause a problem in real life. Now if you like to shoot test charts......

I agree. In real life it should be fine.
