Because the Firmware version is 1:00 SDM lenses work as screw driven lenses.

Any particular reason you haven't updated it to the recent firmware? Does it not work?

I used the camera pretty much exclusively for outdoor photography and found that it was fine just the way it was, If a person wanted to I can't imagine that there would be any problem to update the firmware.

Having the original firmware is actually a plus as it will then screwdrive SDM lenses. I'm tempted just because of it!
