FA 50mm f1.7 - (yes f1.7 - the awesome one)

PentaxForums.com Marketplace Listing

Item for Sale
FA 50mm f1.7 - (yes f1.7 - the awesome one)

Asking Price
$305 AU including postage in Australia

Item Location
Newcastle (near Sydney) (Australia)

Item Description
I am selling this legendary Pentax FA 50mm f1.7.
Although half a stop slower than the still-in-production f1.4 version, this lens is almost universally acknowledged as better thanks to its ridiculous sharpness even wide open. I FREQUENTLY use this at f1.7, and I don't like soft images. By f2.4 it's just stupidly sharp all the way through the frame. Cropping by 60-70% isn't a problem at all.
By the way, if you haven't seen the reviews - it's not just me that says this - the 50 f1.7 gets a whopping 9.6/10 average, one of the highest of all lenses, whereas the f1.4 only gets 8.7. It also has the beautiful colours that FA primes are renowned for.

This lens isn't still in production, and it is very hard to find these particularly in Australia so yeah... good luck!
Offers are welcome - I just want to buy something else so I am selling THREE good lenses.

International please contact me and I'll work out a price for you with shipping.

Pictures up now - and the coffee shot is a sample from this lens on a K10D. This was autofocus, at f1.7 - yes, I can barely believe it when I see this picture, f1.7 with this kind of clarity... whoa.

NOTE: Pictured is just a generic lens cap but I can assure you it comes with the proper original Pentax cap. I was using this lens in the park the other night and didn't want to risk dropping the original in the grass and never being able to find it so I swapped it for a generic one, and now the proper one is in a bag that I didn't have with me - so it DOES come with a Pentax cap despite the pictures. Pentax rear cap also.

tjk911 - yeah I know it sucks for me too when selling stuff here!

mpmetro - I think I remember reading somewhere that they are optically the same. Having said that, the FA gets a score of 9.6 out of 10 over 15 reviews, and the F gets only 9.06 over 45 reviews. If the FA were to have the same number of reviews (45) then I'd argue it's enough that a difference of 0.5 does actually mean something. Basically I'm not sure there'd be a noticeable difference, but the FAs are obviously newer, as in, this copy itself may only be 11 years old as opposed to an F which may be 15 or 16 years old...?

If I were back in Malaysia I'd grab this from you haha.

@mpmetro I actually suspect that they might have the same lens formula. Same amount of elements, blades and groups. I'm not too familiar with K-mount history, but I suspect the FA 50 f1.7 might have just been a repackaging (DA40 vs DA40 XS).

F 50/1.7
FA 50/1.7

Just to add on the question of F vs FA, I've had both, and they are identical optically. I did find the screw drive on the F version was a fair bit louder though (at least between my copies). The FA is sexier too.

Help me out guys, I'm very new to Pentax and lenses and am currently bidding on a K7 on eBay. Will this lens fit a K7 and still autofocus? what are other good lenses- there's limited, F, FA, etc - is that it as far as lenses for a K7 goes. I need the lens to do all the autofocus properties and speak to the camera, etc.

Thanks,

Rich

Lenses that will speak to the camera and autofocus are: F, FA, D-FA and DA.

Limited is just a sort of 'badge of honour', it has nothing to do with the series like FA or DA. So yes, this FA lens will not only autofocus but do everything that a modern digital (DA) lens would do - aperture control from the camera etc. Your exif data will even recognise the lens as being the FA 50mm f1.7 etc.

EDIT:
Sorry, you also asked what other good lenses are, I just saw that.
Well it takes a while to get to know all the ins and outs by using reviews (check out the lens database) but some of people's favourite autofocussing lenses are:

Wide:
DA 15mm f4 Limited
DA 12-24mm f4

Mid/general:
DA 16-45mm f4
Tamron 17-50mm f2.8
Tamron 28-75mm f2.8
DA* 16-50mm f2.8
FA 31mm Limited
FA 43mm Limited
F or FA 50mm f1.7

Longer/mild telephoto:
DA* 50-135mm f2.8
FA 77mm Limited (all the FA limiteds are legendary in status)
Tamron 90mm f2.8 (macro)
Sigma 105mm f2.8 (macro)

There are probably lots I msised but these have all been on my to buy list at some stage, if they aren't right now.

Just a general question: Whats up with shipping from Australia to the US? Is it notoriously slow or expensive? Are you basically just kicking your camera gear into the void and hoping it comes out on the other side?

I don't think it's that bad. Generally for me it's the currency conversion, the slightly higher AUD prices and the potential risk of damage. That and, well, I'm broke.

But shipping-wise it should be relatively safe if packaged properly. And forumers here are usually very good at communication from my experience.

No the shipping here is RELIABLE but compared to the US and UK I think, it's a bit expensive.
Eg. I used to buy DVDs all the time and from the UK the shipping would be like 1.50 pounds, which was $3 AU at the time - whereas me posting a DVD there was about $7.

Australia Post is reliable, but is quite expensive. There are express options that will get your package pretty much anywhere in the civilised world in 3-5 days, though they cost quite a bit more again. I think the cheapest slowest (sea) parcel post starts at about $20, a basic package by air is upwards of $30, and express will be 70+. I've posted many things internationally, and they've always arrived safely, though always cost rather more than most people want to pay for sales purposes. Thus why I sell nothing overseas, the only things I send are gifts where I'm eating the entire cost anyway.

Um, that totally depends what you're sending?
A lens of this size would not be upwards of $30 necessarily, as even with bubble wrap etc it's under 750g. Some countries it would be abut $20, that's about it.
I just don't want misrepresentations about the price of Australian postage turning potential buyers away on this forum - not just for this lens (which is sold now anyway) or for me, but for all Australians!

Lens is sold pending payment, thanks everyone.

Well it's sold anyway but ok.
The average price paid on that database is very rarely indicative of what you'll pay in Australia. I saw a copy of this go on eBay like three months ago for $260, auction.
Try just about any lens - forum price versus eBay price and you'll see what I mean.
