auto focus zoom lens

I am VERY new to photography and experienced my first lens shortfall this weekend. While taking pictures of my son playing t-ball I found myself needing to be able to zoom in farther than my kit lens would allow. I have a k-x camera with the kit 18-55mm lens. I have been trying to do some research on what lens would fit my need but I feel I am a bit over my head in this department as I am a computer guy and barely scratching the surface of photography. From what I have found it seems that I am looking for something like the DA L 55 - 300 or so. If someone has a lens that they no longer need and would work for my situation that would be amazing. I would like to get a good lens that will last but my budget would like to stay below $150 and would be even better under $100.

Your best bet would be to get a 70-300mm lens (its a lot cheaper than the 55-300)

I have a FA 28-70mm, if you wanna buy it pls PM me. But if you want to go for longer zoom, the DA-L (plastic mount) used maybe somewhat around $250; or a DA-L 50-200mm brand new is well under $200.

like manishved said, the FA 70-300 used is relatively cheap, and there are always other 70/80-300mm Sigma/Tamorn made rather in-expensive too.

I'd offer you either of these lenses for $93 + shipping of your choice. Image quality and general usefulness of both will be similar to your DA 18-55. Either would serve you well until you have the personal experience to up-grade to a much more expensive lens if you feel the need to do so. The entry level 70-300mm zooms will all provide about the same results for family photography use and any significantly faster lens (f 2.8 - class 200-300mm) will be an order of magnitude more expensive. You might also consider the f3.5-4/28-200 zooms as possibilities.

Or, the Tamron AF 75-300/4-5.6 LD Macro, which I find to be slightly better but also larger, reviewed here:
