These are both excellent lenses. I am especially happy with my Sigma 18-50 EX -- a nice compact, lightweight 2.8 constant zoom to replace the kit lens. Good luck with the sale!

I'm looking to upgrade the two stock lenses that came with my k-x kit I bought 2 years ago.

Are both of these compatible with the k-x?

Can you also comment on the pro/cons of each? I'm interested in getting just one new lens and I wanted to know the benefits of the two you have listed.

Thanks!

Assuming your K-X kit was the 18-55, 50-200 lenses, these two lenses would be very nice upgrades. And yes, they are compatible-- K-mount!

I have all 4 of these lenses, LBA!! So I think I can comment with some experience about them:

Pros of the 18-50 EX over the 18-55 kit lens are: larger aperture (f/2.8 constant) so you can take pictures in much dimmer light, produces beautiful out-of-focus background areas (bokeh), and better lens build (metal mount, higher quality plastic construction). I think it takes sharper pictures too.

Cons of the 18-50 EX compared to 18-55 kit lens: much heavier, over twice the weight, a bit less reach on the long end (but not that noticeable)

Pros of the 55-300 over the 50-200: greater reach, larger aperture over the same range (stays at f/4 until about 125mm), generally considered to be better optical quality

Cons of the 55-300 compared to 50-200: heavier, longer lens, thus not nearly as portable/compact, somewhat slower autofocus

Wow, thank you for the comprehensive reply!

Now I have to rethink if I want just one. Both seem like a great permanent upgrade to the two stock ones I have.

I'll see if I can do a little bit of background research and then shoot the seller a PM.

Thank you!

No problem! IMHO, you might see more immediate benefits if you get the 18-50 EX than the 55-300. The extra reach and better IQ of the longer telephoto zoom are very nice, no question, but the 50-200 is not that shabby and I sometimes prefer it's lighter weight and smaller size. If you only have the two kit lenses right now, you will really appreciate being able to use f/2.8 apertures that the Sigma 18-50 EX offers.

Some pictures I've taken with my Sigma 18-50 EX DC lens, at f/2.8
