Someone asked me about a Sigma 120-400 I bought here a few months ago. Here's an edited version of what I wrote:

"I bought this specifically to take on a trip to South Africa, needed the 400mm reach for wildlife, birds and landscapes. I calibrated it on both my K20D's before going, but used it on one body only. Took me about two days to realize that it was still back-focusing didn't download my images to a laptop immediately. The calibration using a test page did not approximate real-world conditions, I suppose. I did some in-the-field adjustments and nailed it and ended up very happy with how the images turned out. I usually bump the contrast in PP in Lightroom, but the sharpness is very good, with the far end slightly softer. I used it mainly from a vehicle and rested it on a bean-bag for a good solid base. The result is that I have many sharp images. I like the HSM - it's fast and quiet. My version does not have optical stabilization - I did not miss it.

I also bought an older Sigma 135 -400 for my sister for about $300 less than what I paid for 120-400 and was very impressed with the way that lens performed on my K20D and on her K100D. No HSM, of course, but ask about zoom creep.

Thanks for your impressions, demondata.

I've mainly used the 120-400mm to photograph soccer games for the school I work at. I haven't felt the need to make any adjustments in autofocus with this particular lens and I am very pleased with how sharp it is. The only thing I don't like is the aperture range (a tad slow for sports), but for its price/reach it performs quite well. I've found that the 120-400mm is very reasonable to use handheld, but for full soccer games, a monopod is necessary (it gets heavy after an hour).

The only other minus I can think of for this lens is that it has somewhat low contrast/saturation, but I only shoot RAW and that's very easy to correct in PP.

As for lens creep, I've only noticed that it creeps when you point the lens to the ground. But I'm pretty sure this is true for many lenses.

Here are a few I like, not sharpened, but in Lightroom at export I set output sharpening to Screen and Low.

There's more in the album here: demondata's Album: Sigma DG 120-400 4.5-5.6 APO HSM - PentaxForums.com

Such a good lens. Mine has OS, but it does not make a difference on the Pentax, you do not need it. The SR of Pentax works fine, and you save lots of battery life.

Can't believe the number of views with no bites. Shipping is now included on both remaining lenses.
