The focus adjustment is to compensate for the fact that the AF is now focusing at objects at the infrared spectrum. If the default AF (focusing at the visible spectrum) isn't tweaked, focusing won't be entirely sharp, even if there is ample DOF.

Because of the slight adjustment in the AF, what is viewed in the viewfinder might be slightly off focus wise but the IR images will be in focus when shot.

You know we can get into debug mode to adjust AF w/ K100D camera, right?
Ah, it's not the Super model then. No harm there.

BTW, my friend is using some new IR filter now, which is much thinner than the previous self-cut ones. He only needs to add about 300nm. So what you see in the viewfinder is still quite in focus. Not like previous ones (what you see in the viewfinder is abit blurred when the focusing is on).
OK, so the factor is negligible. Is this friend in Singapore? How much would the work be on a body I send?

No, hold on. I have the Super. I guess he cannot work on that since there is no way into debug mode. Or is there?

Maybe the easiest way to ask this is: what bodies qualify?

My friend is in Beijing China. He's sold several converted K100D and Ds here at the forum, and to Singapore as well.

Yes, he can do the conversion w/ the Super, but currently there is no secret code for getting into its debug mode, so you won't have properly focused results if you rely on the camera's AF. Of course you can still use MF to get good results by some practice.

Currently the cameras he can and have converted include K100D and Ds only.

I think for your case, the economic way is to let go off your K100D Super and buy a converted K100D directly from him You are gonna use the camera for IR only, and the kit lens has been verified to be the best for IR photography, much better than the DA1645. Most lenses would cause hot spot problem when taking IR photos, but the kit lens is surprisingly very IR friendly

That is interesting. I was rather hoping to use the precise lens you say is inferior, the 16-45mm. The kit lens is better but the examples posted above are with the 16-45mm? Are there any samples with the kit or could you point me to a comparison?

The camera being sold comes with the kit lens? Otherwise I'll have to keep mine from the kit I own, not a big deal but decreases resale value.

Trying to convince myself I can afford this now... though I know I should wait.

rparmar, I can personally verify that the DA 16-45mm flunks the IR hotspot test. Another lens in my collection that has hotspots is the FA 50mm f/2.8 macro. The DA 18-55mm is surprisingly very good for IR. The old Sigma 28mm f/2.8 manual focus PK-A mount lens is another good IR lens. Must get round to test my other lenses if they are hotspot free when shooting IR.

Thanks for the info! Can you tell me what the "hotspot" issue is and how to spot it? Do the photos above show it in any way? Trying to learn!

Here you can find something about IR photography:

wrotniak.net: Infrared Photography with a Digital Camera
DPanswer: Digital Infrared Resource page

Under the second link there are some talks about hot spot stuff

Hope this helps.

If I could just stop buying lenses I'd be able to get one of these.
