Item Description
I'm reluctantly selling my F* 250-600. I purchased it from the original owner 6 weeks ago. She and her husband bought it for $5,700 in 1990 to film a solar eclipse. They used it only a few times. It is in beautiful condition, as you can see from the photos I've posted at
http://photobucket.com/pk250-600. It comes with everything that was with it new, including the registration card and the bill of sale. I've added an OP/Tech cover, which you can see in the photos. The cover fits like it was custom made and enables the use of the lens in wet conditions.
Why am I selling? I own a Sigma 500mm f/4.5. When I bought the Pentax 250-600 my plan was to sell the Sigma and more or less break even on cost. But I've found that for the type of wildlife photography I enjoy I need to be able to walk and shoot. I can carry the Sigma for an hour or so and shoot off a monopod, but the Pentax requires a tripod. I'm 68 years old, and between the weight of the lens, the tripod, and the gimbal I'm just not able transport the Pentax more than a few hundred feet from my car before I'm done in. So it isn't a substitute for the Sigma and I can't keep both.
You'll find a review of the F* 250-600 by Adam in the Forums database. The only thing I can add is that the zoom feature is incredibly useful for finding birds in foliage and in flight that would otherwise be hard to find at 600mm. I zoom out, locate, and then zoom back in.
I've said the lens is in beautiful condition, and it is, but let me list everything I know that isn't perfect: 1) There are a couple of paint nicks. If you look carefully you can see two of them in the third picture and a third on the screw head to the filter drawer in the 4th picture. 2) The ribbed black rubber ring just in front of the aperture ring has a small piece missing, maybe a quarter of an inch in width, exactly at the bottom of the lens. It doesn't affect anything and it can't be seen when the lens is in use because of the position. Should be easy to fix if someone were so inclined. 3) The leather lens cap had leather or something that looked like leather flaking off where it had been sprayed or painted on the foam seams. I rubbed the seams clean and used leather conditioner on the cap itself. It now appears to be in like-new condition.
There are only a few of these lenses still around. They're special. I doubt there's one in better condition than the one I'm selling. Note that if someone buys it today (Saturday, 11/10), I'll ship it today. But I'm traveling most of next week and won't be able to ship it until next Friday if it doesn't sell immediately. I'm only selling and shipping to the continental U.S. Shipping and insurance are included in the price of $4,500.
