Pentax M* 300mm

PentaxForums.com Marketplace Listing

Item for Sale
Pentax M* 300mm

Asking Price
200 USD

Item Location
Kenosha, WI (United States)

Item Description
This lens is has been around the block a time or two or 5 according to its looks. The rear element is all scratched up and the finish has a nice well worn patina. The front element looks good. There a few dust specs inside that aren't hurting iq. Focus is smooth. I've never noticed any effect on image quality due to the scratches. I included a couple boring handheld samples. I may have more to post from the last trip to the marsh once I get them transferred to my computer. The IQ and size of this lens is what convinced me my SMC Tak long glass doesn't fit my style. I guess the reason I'm selling it is with the funds from the other sales, I can get a DA* 300mm and have a sealed 300mm that maybe someday Pentax will get a proper sealed TC for which will complete my telephoto needs (I think). With the DA* 300 now on order, I trust that it will be at least comparable in IQ to this lens, so no sense in having two.

Lens comes with front and rear caps. Front cap is not Pentax.

I got one of this lens, very light weight for a 300mm. I used to have both DA* 300mm and this lens, the DA* 300mm produce better image than this lens, but not 4 times better as the price. End up sold the DA* and keep this one.
Really nice lens, someone should grab it.

Alan- you're right. My DA*300 came in today. It is sharp, but it is surprising how well the M* holds its own against it. I did see the dimension and weight differences in the reviews, but once you have the DA* mounted, you know its there compared to the M*. Still for sale as I'm pleased with the comfort of the weather sealing on the DA*.

Condition is only listed a poor due to it being ugly and the rear element scratches. After comparing to the DA*, I'd be very surprised if those scratches are harming IQ at all. I just saw how the example photo looks on my work monitor. It isn't a proper representation of what this lens does.

I have it and it works great on my full frame Sony NEX-VG900 and on my Pentax DSLRs that also have AF with the SMC Pentax-F 1.7x AF Adapter.

Could you post a sample at f/11 of a somewaht dark - homogeneous and well lit subject to see how the scratches affect IQ? If they were on the front element IŽd jump on it.

I've been waiting for the sun to come out. Looks like today I'll finally have some conditions to test the lens as requested. I've never had a problem with it in function, but I'm always up to seeing if there's some scenario that makes the damage actually show in a photo.

sorry for the delay in sample photos requested of a dark well lit object at f11. Between work scheduling, the weather not cooperating and a lack of dark sun facing objects, it took a bit. The sample is the rusty underside of a Jeep hood in direct full sunlight. First exposure is green button metering on K10 and second is my speeding up the shutter a bit.
