Pentax A 28mm f/2.8 Lens

PentaxForums.com Marketplace Listing

Item for Sale
Pentax A 28mm f/2.8 Lens

Asking Price
80 USD

Item Location
Toronto (Canada)

Item Description
The humble but very compact and sharp A 28mm f/2.8.

28mm is the true "normal" focal length on APS-C (equivalent field-of-view on APS-C as 43mm is on film or full-frame...just like the legendary FA 43mm).

It has wonderful bokeh for a retrofocus lens with only 5 aperture blades.

The A28mm is definitely one of the best "bang-for-the buck" lenses available.

I bought this lens offline from PF member Steinback and it's as I purchased it. Clean optics, but with chip out of the rear flange that protects the aperture lever which doesn't affect function but is why I'm not asking for 25% more.

Recently I acquired a Zeiss 25mm f/2.8, so the A28mm has become a bit redundant and it's time to clear it out. Although I will miss the very tiny size, compared to the rather much larger Zeiss.

The focus ring is not loose (as many A lenses tend to get). There is some brassing on the aperture ring. The glass is very clean, except for a tiny mark on the rear element that does not seem to affect image quality (see sample images below).

Includes Pentax front and rear caps.

Great lens to own. On a crop sensor DSLR, this is perhaps the most essential prime lens one could own. I'd nab this one if I didn't already have mine. Clean and nice price too...

Thanks Brad, it is a great lens on a crop sensor dSLR. It's certainly a better all-around choice for a single prime than the "nifty-fifty". Perhaps it should be called a Great-Two-Eight?

It really is the ONE prime that I would take if I were to head out with just one lens. On a crop sensor camera like all of our Pentaxes, that 28mm equates to about 42mm on a film body or full frame. 42mm is perfectly in the zone of being the ideal "normal" lens. Even a 35mm lens is getting a tad long as it becomes about 53mm equivalent. This 28mm lens will focus VERY close, has the famous colors Pentax is known for, is impressively sharp, has that classic build quality, is compact, has the auto-exposure aperture function, blah, blah, blah... Kind of a no-brainer for anyone without one. It's at the top of my list of essential glass to own.

Yep, 28mm is a very natural and practical focal length on APS-C.

I had the DA35mm Ltd and then the Voigtlander 40mm and indeed found the 35mm a hair long and the 40mm getting into short telephoto range....I'd rather just get a 50mm that point.

A bit frustrating that Pentax has so many (mostly re-purposed full-format) lenses in the 35~43mm range and then the only option between those and the DA21mm is the rather rarefied FA31mm.

Then the only options for genuine SMC between 21mm and 35mm is used. There is the slightly pricey (for used) FA24mm f/2. Or the A28mm or F28mm.

But what few people realize is that the longer focal of a 28mm gives a shallower depth-of field (for the same scene framing) than a 24mm at the same aperture. Or put another way, the 24mm f/2 is the equivalent DOF of a 28mm f/2.4. So the FA24mm is a pretty steep premium over the (still a bit pricey used) F28mm for half a stop of DOF.

If you don't need autofocus (but can't live without Av) then A28mm is the optical equivalent of the F28mm and a fraction of the price. Both are excellent wide-open and even better than the newer FA28mm: Comparison Pentax FA28 versus F28.

Hence, my statement that the A28mm is the best bang for the buck K-mount prime
