Item Description smc PENTAX-DA* 1:2.8 16-50mm ED AL [IF] SDM, with new SDM motor. $695 net to me.
I purchased this to replace 16-45, which I like a lot. But F2.8 and weather seal are nice to have. I had to send it to CRIS to replace the SDM motor and here is what they did:
1. Estimate to replace SDM unit
2. Replace main PCB assembly
3. Replace zoom roller
4. Adjust to manufacturers specifications
5. General check and clean
6. Repair comes with a 6 month service warranty
The SDM they installed is the new version, that is why they had to replace the PCB assembly (the major chip) to work with the SDM unit. The new SDM motor is reported much more reliable. And you will have 5.5 month warranty.
The lens is in very good condition, no obvious dust inside, no scratches visible; no fungus or foggy. Aperture blades are dry and snappy. Zoom is smooth and AF is quick and silent. It needs +4 adjust on K5, and both ends are spot on after adjusting. Very sharp in center, and of course a little soft in corners when wide open. Cosmetically, the lens shows only very light sign of usage. See photos attached.
The repair took 3 months, and during that 3 months, I bought DA 21/3.2, DA 35/2.4 from forums market, and a new DA* 55/1.4 and a DA 18-135. Prime lenses cover the range and 18-135 provides weather sealing. And I still have 16-45. So this nice lens should go to a new home.
