Tokina AT-X 300mm F2.8 APO SD

PentaxForums.com Marketplace Listing

Item for Sale
Tokina AT-X 300mm F2.8 APO SD

Asking Price
$500 US Net

Item Location
Vancouver (Canada)

Item Description
This must be the most affordable dedicated KA mount manual focus 300mm/2.8!

I have reviewed this lens couple years ago in this Forums with sample photos:

https://www.pentaxforums.com/userreviews/rikenon-tokina-300mm-f2-8.html

Tokina has put in the whole nine yards for this lens. It comes standard with multi-coated 112mm front & 35.3mm rear drop-in Tokina filter, Tokina screw-in metal front lens cap, Pentax plastic rear lens cap, reversible metal hood, soft & hard lens cases (with strap) and all original packaging as pictured below.

A disclosure for your consideration. This lens will not close down to the chosen aperture (e.g. f/4, f/5.6, f/8...) on my K5 regardless of Mode setting, but the camera can meter the scene correctly with the aperture input. That means the aperture stay wide open at f/2.8 at all time on my K5. My local repair guy think it is a communication issue because he cannot find problem on my K5 or the lens itself. I do not have another K5 to test out, therefore cannot confirm whether this happen with all K5.

It works perfectly on other dSLR & film SLR such as K3, K-r, K20D & MX.

Very pretty :-) Unfortunately I have not had good results manually focusing, though they were not good lenses.

I don't understand why the lens won't set for the 2.8 aperture on your K5 It should if it works on your other K mounts. If I understand this correctly the lens in the A setting for the aperture won't stop down at 2.8 but it will manually stop down at 2.8 on your K5 ? If it does manually stop down using the ring does your K5 meter correctly ? A bit confused ?

What happens if you use the aperture ring on your K5? Surely that should work? (Not in the market myself - too many 300/2.8s already if you can believe it!)

On my K5 - nothing. It will stay wide open no matter which Exposure Mode the camera is in or what the aperture ring is set (A or at the actual F-stop). When the aperture ring is locked at A, I can select any f-stop from the camera, but the lens just will not close down to the selected f-stop except f/2.8. I cannot preview any DOF with the on/off switch neither. The camera will exposure the picture properly although it is always at f/2.8. A mystery until I can test it on another K5. My local repair shop has no K5 on hand, which is a good indication about K5 reliability.

300/2.8 lens is extremely versaitile both indoor or outdoor and MF version like this lens is more portable as well. I just need money to cover the Sigma Sport 120-300/2.8 I bought a month ago.

I have couple PMs and may seal a deal this evening.

Ahhh. There are 3 wonderful 300/2.8 lenses for sale, and I don't have money not even for the cheapest. I'm shore that when I will have money, will be no 300/2.8 in the marketplace. I must sale something.

Have you tested this on a K-5ii or K-5iis? Could it somehow be just the K-5, assuming it isn't somehow just YOUR K-5?

I am surrounded by people from the "Dark Side" so I have no acces to another K5-series camera. My local repair guy was a Pentax tech and he has no K5 in the shop either, a good sign about reliability on the K5-series. I did try it out on other dSLRs like K200D, K-r and the new K-3 plus film SLRs and it works prefectly. For disclosure purpose, I rather state the aperture wouldn't step down on K-5 cameras instead of claiming it just happen to my K-5.
