Item Description
I am selling a Pentax A* 300mm f2.8 lens and a Pentax 1.4XL teleconverter. I would prefer to sell the two together, but will consider offers one or the other.
I am the second owner of the 300mm f2.8. The original owner painted the lens barrel gray and applied a camo detail to the lens hood. There is absolutely no paint on the optics. I used this lens professionally for wildlife photography in the 1990's with Pentax LX bodies. As you can see from the wear on the paint, I made extensive use of this lens. Despite the rough appearance of the paint, the optics are perfect. There are no rub marks or scratches on the front or rear elements, nor is there any haze or fungus. The aperture and focus fell like new. The internal filter holder comes out easily.
Included with this lens are the original hood, a rear Pentax lens cap, the trunk case, two different warming filters, an Arca Swiss tripod head mounting plate, and a custom plate to shift the center of weight closer to the tripod axis (see photo). This plate was designed to balance with a Pentax LX and winder attached to the lens. The 1.4 XL is also included with this price.
Note: I was told by Pentax not to use a skylight filter because the greatest sharpness is achieved with no filter. That being said, the degradation due to the addition of a warming filter is minor. That is not the case with the addition of a front filter. The original owner sold a front filter to me with the lens. I tested the lens both with and without the front filter. The filter caused a definite deterioration in the image sharpness.
I am the original owner of the Pentax 1.4XL tele-extender. This item is in excellent condition. The optics are unblemished and it works perfectly with the 300mm lens.
I kept these lenses thinking that I would one day return to wildlife photography, but it hasn't happened, which is why I am selling them. I would have absolutely no reservations about continuing to use this lens and the tele-extender for professional wildlife photography. The photographs of my dog were made with the 300mm lens and a Pentax K-5. The first of the photographs was made at f2.8, and the second two were made at f4.
