Sigma 100-300mm F4 APO DG for Sony, $650 or partial trade for RX100

PentaxForums.com Marketplace Listing

Item for Sale
Sigma 100-300mm F4 APO DG for Sony

Asking Price
650.00 USD

Item Location
Indianapolis, IN (United States)

Item Description
This is the legendary Sigma 100-300mm F4 APO DG telephoto lens. If you are one of those who have been craving this lens, then this may be your best chance to own it an affordable price. I bought this lens last year from a graduate student who was going back to China. As you can see, it is the later version of the lens and it is in almost new condition. I'm selling it for what I paid.

I used to own the K-mount version, but I made the very difficult decision last year to sell it since I didn't want to keep $1200 tied up in a lens I only have occasion to use two or three times a year (My kids are too young to play outdoor team sports, and I'm not the adventurous type).

But shortly after I sold my Pentax version, I realized I could buy the same lens in Sony mount for almost half the price. So I bought this lens, and my plan was to buy a used Sony A-580 DSLR to go with it. The A-580 is kind of like a close cousin to the K-5, with rugged construction, shake reduction and the same great image sensor, and it can be had used for $300-$400.

However, before I bought an A-580, I had the amazing good luck of finding a local seller offering the 100-300mm in Pentax mount for an amazing price, so I bought it. And now my Sony version is up for sale.

It may sound strange to buy a camera body for a single lens, but it may actually make sense for a lot of people. First, it would give you a second camera body, which can come in handy. And secondly, it gives you access to some great lenses that are not available for Pentax, such as Tamron's new 16-300mm and 150-600mm, and the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8. As well as some great macro lenses, such as the Sigma 150mm and the Tamron 180mm.

Getting a Sony body would also provide a future upgrade path to a FF camera, if that interests you. And the Sigma 100-300mm is FF compatible.

As food for thought, here is a partial list of lenses available in Sony mount but NOT Pentax mount:

Tamron
150-600MM F/5-6.3 Di VC USD
16-300MM F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD
70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di USD
24-70mm F/2.8 Di USD
70-200mm F/2.8 Di USD (New version)
AF60mm F/2 Di II
90mm F/2.8 Di MACRO 1:1 USD (New version)
SP AF180mm F/3.5 Di

Tokina
11-16mm f/2.8

Sigma
150mm f/2.8 Macro

The Tamron is a great lens, and I'm pissed that they don't make it in K-mount. If they did, I would own the Tamron in addition to the Sigma. I would use the Sigma when I needed the speed and/or when I wanted the best possible image quality, and I would take the Tamron when I wanted to travel light. I've written to Tamron several times about it, but Tamron seems to have made a strategic decision to abandon the K-mount.

I still find it tempting to go to a dual Sony/Pentax kit, especially if Tamron keeps releasing interesting lenses like the 16-300mm and the 150-600mm. But I just don't have the budget for two systems right now since my home theater hobby is making constant demands on my budget:

Thanks, I'm not familiar with that forum, but I'll check it out.

UPDATE: No go on the Dyxum forum. It takes at least 40 posts and 60 days before a member can sell on there, and even then the authorization is not automatic.

Thanks for letting me know about that site. I posted the lens there, and I believe it is sold...I'm just awaiting payment. I'll take this ad down once payment has been sent.
