SMC Pentax-FA* 1:2.8 200mm IF & ED Price reduced

PentaxForums.com Marketplace Listing

Item for Sale
SMC Pentax-FA* 1:2.8 200mm IF & ED

Asking Price
750.00 USD (Final price reduction before eBay)

Item Location
Newark, DE (United States)

Item Description
I listed this as condition "good" because it really is in very good condition. As with all of the silver-coated lenses, the finish rubs off pretty easily, so it looks worse than it is. See the photos. The mechanics and optics are in excellent condition. No scratches, fungus, haze, rub marks, or any other blemishes are visible on the glass. There is normal dust within the lens that is revealed in the flashlight photo. The aperture is clean and moves exactly as it should. Autofocus is very quick. The manual-autofocus clutch works perfectly. I prefer its manual clutch to the current quick-shift feature because when the lens is in autofocus mode, the focus ring is locked in place, so there's no danger of accidentally changing focus. You do not need to flip the switch on the camera body to go from AF to MF mode and back. The images are very sharp at every aperture. The lens required no autofocus fine adjustment on my K-5. It also worked fine on my K-01, though autofocus was slow on the K-01.

This is a fantastically sharp and contrasty lens. Its subject rendering reminds me of the FA 77 limited and the K 135 f/2.5. Generally, I find that 200mm is either too short or too long for me (hence, the sale). I did take this lens to an air show in Ocean City, and it was a good length for capturing the planes. See below. It's also a good length for photographing stage performances, such as music and theater (though I didn't do that with this particular lens). For more reach in a small package, it's a prime candidate for a teleconverter. If you have a quality teleconverter, such as the Pentax rear converter A 2X-S or 2X-L, I'm sure you can get good results. But I only have a really cheap, mediocre teleconverter. I did include a few examples.

Price includes PayPal and insured Priority Mail shipping to the United States.

Here are photos of the lens:

As you know, shining a flashlight through a lens exaggerates whatever might be in the lens. What you see here is pretty average.

Here are photos taken with the lens:

And with my crappy 2X teleconverter:

Someone asked me if this lens is good for capturing photos of kids running around. Here are a few examples. All at f/3.5. I wanted the shallow DoF.

I can recommend both lens (legendary FA* quality) and seller (very helpful and great communication).

Very tempting, but I really, really don't need to spend more on my LBA! Btw, maybe this lens would be a perfect project for that guy that was refinishing older lenses? He did some awesome work - just can't find the link now. Bet he could do something really cool with this awesome lens!

Thank you, Class A, for the endorsement! And thank you, HenrikDK for the suggestion. It does ring a bell, but I can't remember which lenses he had done. I do remember that the one I saw looked gorgeous.

Among other lenses, he did the SMC Pentax K 135mm f/3.5. You'll find more if you look at his post history.
