Sigma APO 1:5-6.3 170-500mm reduced price

PentaxForums.com Marketplace Listing

Item for Sale
Sigma APO 1:5-6.3 170-500mm

Asking Price
400.00 USD

Item Location
Elkton, MD (United States)

Item Description
This is probably the least expensive way to get to 500mm in a single, AF lens (i.e., no teleconverter). I like this lens a lot, but I now have a 300 f/2.8 manual focus prime and I perversely prefer the challenge of manual focus. The lens is in very good shape. Very few signs of usage on the barrel. The glass, aperture, and electronics are without fault. The lens is reasonably sharp wide open if you nail the focus. Stopping down yields more contrast (and DOF, of course). AF is moderately quick and as accurate on my K-5 as any other AF lens I've used. My K-5 isn't the best at AF; YMMV. It's not too heavy - it can be hand-held - but a monopod or tripod is recommended. The tripod collar comes off very easily and the lens is easier to hold without it. I'm including the black rubber band in the pictures. It completely stops the zoom creep that happens if you point the lens downward, but you can still manually zoom just fine. I've used it with a crappy 2X manual focus teleconverter for photos of the moon and the results are surprisingly good. It registers as f/4.5 at 170mm and f/6.7 at 500mm for me. Others have reported similarly. It does very well at suppressing CA compared to other long lenses I've used, but there is a little bit of PF here and there.

The dust in this photo is on the outside of the lens (it's a flash photo), though there is surely dust within the lens.

Here is a link to photos of the lens:

Is there a lens hood included or is one built in? The pictures made it appear to need a bayonet style hood.

Bump for some very nice shots and the fact that I have the same lens, its prob the best 500mm for walking around birding because its almost 1lb lighter than the 150-500mm.

It comes with a reversible, bayonet-style hood. It's plastic, but very sturdy. You can see it mounted in reverse in the first photo.

Thanks, and yes, it is pretty light. You can definitely hand-hold it.

Trades? Offers?

I could use a fast zoom. 17-50, 16-50, 28-75, 28-80, etc.
WR zoom
A/F primes (I have FA 50 1.4, Sigma 30 1.4)
FA 43
Would consider DA 40 as partial trade.
A manual focus f/1.2 lens.
I could use a good, tall tripod. 70"+ extended height.
