Now here we have the F 1.7X for $325, great price, the best price I've seen in a long time and by the time I see it there are 2 pm's sent.
I can't afford it right now anywho but it's the principle.

maybe I can also post the question here:

I think that the smc A 2X-S TC was made for short lens, while 2X-L was made for long-telephoto lens. Does anybody know if the 2X-S will also do well with long-telephoto lens ? Is it sharp and does it add a lot of CA and PF ? I'd use it mainly with a Tamron adaptall SP 300mm f/2.8.

The TC does work pretty well w/ 300/2.8 lenses. As far as I know the 1.4X-S and 2X-S TC should work w/ both long and short lenses, but the L versions probably would work better w/ some long lenses. Actually the 1.4xL and 2xL TCs work very well w/ the FA*200/2.8 lens too. Because the protruding front part, the 1.4xL and 2xL TC can only be used along w/ certain lenses, not all long lenses.
