Well the only equivalent lens worldwide is the Canon 1200 f5.6 but the Pentax is more usable (I think) cause :
1 The canon weights 16,5kgs (ouch)
2 The min focusing distance of the canon is 14meters (8 for the Pentax). I shot the kingfisher 12 m away.
3 The canon is priced 100 000 euros (ouch again)
4 The canon is not stabilised. The K3 is able to stabilize this lens. Don't think you'll use it handheld, anyway. But it may be useful on a monopod

Oh. Well, I'm glad somebody double-checked the math before I completed that PayPal transaction. ;~)

Nobody's making a 1200mm lens anymore -- longest I can find at B&H is 600mm. I suppose it's a bit long for sports action...

Also, f/8 is pretty darned fast for a 1200mm lens.

Why the lottery ? You can make a credit, a collector lens like this one doesn't loose its value with times. On the contrary it may increase value within years...

Such a great LENS! I have a "little" brother of this -- A* 600/5.6 -- it is one of the best lens I've ever owned.. Wish A* 1200/8 wouldn't be so rare an expensive.

Good luck with the sale. Clinton already has one, otherwise I bet he would be interested

I'm not going for it because stabilisation on my K20D only goes up to 800mm.

This is an LBA killer. I now have to seriously weigh up the cost of the lens against future psychologist bills .... hhhmmmm thinking done. I now need to find money for lens and air tickets

My wish!!

I just wish I could find some photos taken with this type of lens, and even this model. Two photos is all I have seen. Not even in Flickr, I can find it. Is it possible to take good photos with this lens? What is the keeper rate?
----
Well, I found 3 perched-bird photos in Flickr:

Hi Pepe,
my flickr account is here :
https://www.flickr.com/photos/121089166@N06/
there a several other pictures taken with this lens.
An issue, as it is an 'A" lens, is that you have to enter manually the focal length, and this is this focal length that is found in the metadata. But on the K5/K5ii, this focal length is limited to 800, so this lens is tagged as a A* 800 mm lens in exif. This is certainly why it can be difficult to correctly identify the lens with exif data. This is not the case anymore with the K3.

This one a bit too much far away, atmospheric turbulence is present

As for every bird picture with long lenses, the keeper rate is low when the bird is constantly moving, high when it stands. I don't want to push iso too high (not above 800 iso) so the speed I use is relatively low. But I manage to make picture impossible to make with another lens and much much better than a FA*600 + 2X TC

...

If you look at flickriver for that lens, there are 3 photos that come up, and one is a picture of the moon:
