Can I ask a question about the operation of these lenses?

Does the part in front of the focusing ring extend when focusing and the part behind it extend with a push/pull similar to a legacy zoom?

troika,
It does extend but it is not a push/pull mechanism. It rotates.

So you can focus and change the macro range separately or they happen at the same time?

Yeah, it's just a normal focus ring (for a prime) with a very long throw. All prime macros are like that -- it allows for very precise focusing in the macro range. On the other hand, it jumps to infinity in a much smaller focus space (in terms of turning the ring) than a non-macro lens, so the space between 8ft->infinity is a just a few millimeters, but while close focusing the ring has more than a full revolution of real estate. The marks on the barrel will let you know the magnification ratio you are at...

Okay, thanks. I have 2 manual prime macros, but neither goes to 1:1 and neither extends on both sides of the focusing ring. I'm in the market for a 1:1 macro and am interested in these lenses, but had never handled one and wasn't sure how it worked.

Thank you again for educating me.

Oh, I see. This one doesn't extend on both sides either. What you see on the front is a built-in slide-out hood. It's a strange design with sort of a ring around it -- I believe that was for a ring flash to fit. They also sold a little macro flash sensor that you could clip on it (which I actually have). You can't go wrong with this lens...

EDIT: changed my mind -- checked mine, and the front does extend. Of course it does, what I am thinking? Still, just one ring...

I have the non-Dental version of this lens (I believe the markings are the only difference and they're only cosmetic). Sharpest lens I own.
