F* 300 4.5 with HGX filter. Priced for a quick sale.

PentaxForums.com Marketplace Listing

Item for Sale
F* 300 4.5 with HGX filter. Priced for a quick sale.

Asking Price
775.00 USD

Item Location
US (United States)

Item Description
A classic priced for a quick sale. I need the money for other purchases.
Very clean glasses and aperture blades.
Notice the small scratches and the small dent in the hood. It also has a tiny tiny tiny mark in the front glass (see last picture). Needless to say that it does not affect picture quality.
I lost the front cap ‘chasing’ a deer in the forest but I have been using a Promaster filter instead. The filter itself is valued at $90: Amazon.com : Promaster Digital HGX Ultraviolet (UV) Filter - 67 : Camera Lens Sky And Uv Filters : Camera & Photo.
It has the original tripod mount.

$795 + paypal fees if any. Free shipping in the US.

What's the difference between this and the DA* 300? Optically the same, but with an aperture ring?

They are optically diffent. DA* is F4 lens, F* is F4.5. F* is lighter, has got no AF override (if you want go to MF, like tamron lenses you must turn MF on camera and on lens too). Hood on F* is built in (very practical). And last but not least F* is a screwdrive lens, DA* 300 has got SDM AF so it's slower.

Wow. Did not expect that much of a difference. Thank you for the info!

Another difference -- F* 300/4.5 was designed as a FF lens, while DA* 300/4 is a lens that people are hoping can be used on FF.

I have no experience with the DA* 300/4 (although it does receive excellent reviews), but I can personally vouch for the superb F* 300/4, which is my favorite lens overall (and would be my pick for my "if-you-were-stuck-on-a-desert-island-and-could-have-just-one-lens" lens).

You can use DA 300/4 and DA 200/2.8 freely on FF cameras. It was tested and works well . There is only a problem with 1.4 pentax TC (AW) - it makes dark circle on FF.

I've used DA 300 only once, Currently I have got F* 300 and for my use (sports - soccer mostly) it's better.

Thanks. I have the DA* 300/4. It is my "desert island" lens. It's only been taken off of one of my K3's for the purpose of installing the 1.4 HD TC behind it.

When birding, I carry 2 bodies. Many times when swapping between the 1.4 HD TC I find that if I am not using it, I wish I was and vise versa. I've been considering another DA* 300 so that I could carry 1 with and 1 without the 1.4 HD TC. (I'm not really interested in the 150-450). So, I was curious about this compared to my DA* 300.

I can't comment on the DA* 300/4, but I doubt you'd be disappointed in the image quality from the F*300/4.5. It's my best lens by far, sharp from wide open and real easy to hand-hold.

The tripod foot can be removed, the lens hood is built-in, so cannot be lost. AF is a bit noisy on K5 and K3, accurate and reasonably fast on both, perhaps slightly faster on K3. It's not as noisy as I expected, being screw-drive.

Cheers

Rob

Thanks guys for the kind words,
The lens is tiny compared to more modern models. And it is also full frame
