Can you explain the issues with your 50-135 a little better? What do you mean that it needs to be "woken up" at times? How often does this happen and what's the solution when it does?

If I haven't used the lens in a while, what I do is manually focus to nearly just out of focus while holding the AF button down and it will focus slowly at first, then gradually more quickly. I do this repeatedly for about 30 seconds until the motor begins to work normally at which point it is fast, silent and accurate generally for the rest of the day. If I were to keep this lens, I would have UncleVanya convert it to screwdrive.

So basically, the SDM is worn out and likely to get worse and possibly quit all together.

In regards to the mentioned squeak - my DA* 55 had it when I bought it used and I worried about the SDM. I got it at a great price then, and the seller offered to take it back and do a refund. I thought it was worth keeping.

3 Years later - It rarely squeaks now, and has been nothing but phenomenal as a set of optics. Purely a dream in rendering quality. If you are interested in this lens - read my review of it on the review page - it is fair and helps explain who it really is for. If you can handle semi-slow AF (mine is pin point accurate though, much more accurate than all my other lenses), this lens will make you happy by what it takes.

Bump for a lens that I adore, and can't wait to see on the K-1!

Can you explain the "slight squeak"? is the SDM motor going bad?

Thanks

From the research I've done and as zbrueningsen pointed out above, the squeak, or more like a chirp, doesn't necessarily indicate SDM failure in the DA55. It's not at all slow to start and doesn't need to be 'woken up'. The AF works great.
