Noel talked me into buying my F*300. It's the sharpest 300mm lens Pentax makes. Color and contrast second to none. It's like having an FA 31 in 300mm.

Somebody has got to buy this fantastic lens. I can only imagine how good it is on the new full frame K-1.

A few questions please:
I have the DA* 300 and DA* 200 lenses and am wondering if it would be a good decision to replace one or both lenses for this lens?
I use the K3. (Doubt that I will ever get the k1).
Has anyone used both 300s before?
I see in the pictures that the lens has the "A'" setting. It is AF right?
Can the lens be rotated from landscape to portrait orentation without removing from the mount?

thanks for any help.

The lens cannot be rotated from landscape to portrait since the mount is "locked" onto the lens. The lens is autofocus screw drive and works fast and reliable. Much faster than my DA*200 so I would also think it would be faster to focus than the DA*300 as well. I have both the F*300 and the DA*200. I have not used the DA*300. The F*300 has better image quality than the DA*200. The rendering and maybe a wee bit sharpness is better. I believe this is a much better lens than the DA*300 and you don't have to worry about SDM failure. A huge bonus. With that being said I would not replace the DA*200 with this lens because of the F2.8 of the DA*200. I use it a lot at night and it works fantastic. The F*300 starts at F4.5 and although very sharp at that aperture I think the DA*200 is still better for evening shots. And sometimes the F*300 is just too long of a lens for me especially when shooting in the grandstand at most events. I use both lenses for different purposes. The F*300 gets used for birding sometimes using my Tamron 1.4 Teleconverter and I also use it for air shows.

So in short, I would replace your DA*300 with the F*300 only if you desire a bit more "punch" to your photo's and you need faster autofocus. Again the F*300 is similar to the FA 31 as far as image quality and pixie dust go. But it would not replace the DA*200.

Oh yea and one more thing. Don't forget the coolness factor of the F*300. That off white lens will give you instant street cred

Here's picture of my F*300 on my old K-5. (I've got a K-3 now).
