I'm looking for a couple of *ist DS bodies in excellent condition (not necessarily from the same seller, of course).

Oh, yes, I already know -- depending on the situation, at times I use either an AF080C or an AF280T with my own *ist DS.

I'm thinking of picking up a couple of good *ist DS copies as gifts (and eB is not always the most dependable place to come up with dependable copies -- that's where this forum would shine -- I am figuring that there have to be some *ist DS bodies out there in PF-land just waiting to find a new home...).

eB is not always the most dependable place to come up with dependable copies

This one was going for $90 CDN from another province in Canada, whereas every other one I could find online was about twice that and then potentially add customs fees too. So I took a gamble and I appear to have won. The previous owner had treated it well, and had even done the firmware upgrade for SD-HC cards. Good luck in your search for more.

What I've been seeing mostly are "complete camera outfits" (with kit lenses), often with "this was my Dad's" or "from a pawn shop" (etc.) qualifiers. I'd rather deal with a fellow Pentaxer here on the forum, if possible. However, maybe I'll be as lucky on eB as you...

When all else fails, contact the seller - you can sometimes get a pretty good feel for how genuine everything feels and how familiar the owner is with camera gear in general. The seller I bought mine from had the feel of a person who'd genuinely loved and cared for their camera but felt it was time to move on. If it had been "D'uuuuh, I dunno, I'm just flogging it off", I might not have been so inclined to dive in.
