Item Description

Looking for a good home is this Tokina AT-X 60-120/2.8 K-mount lens with dedicated SH-553 hood.

The Tokina AT-X 60-120/2.8 is a highly sought-after portrait zoom lens that is quite uncommon in Pentax trim, and the "official" clip-on reversible SH-553 hood (that I eventually obtained separately) actually seems to be even less common. I am now selling my best copy of this lens (I have previously had as many as three of these, one even with a scratch on the front element - but I have been able to obtain just one SH-553 hood).

The lens is in a beautiful cosmetic condition, the optics are clear with a minimum of dust, the focus and zoom actions are smooth, there is no looseness in the barrel or the focus/zoom ring, the aperture blades are clean, the aperture action is "snappy", and the aperture ring works crisply -- in short, the lens is in excellent condition, cosmetically, mechanically, and optically.

Included in the selling price of $229.00 is the dedicated SH-553 hood (in very good condition), the original OEM box (admittedly just a bit worn) (with the original price sticker, from decades ago, for $189.50 on it), its styrofoam liner, the proper Tokina lens pouch (in excellent condition), the original front and rear lens caps (in excellent condition), and an owners manual (that I picked up separately at one time) (in excellent condition). [Note that the black ME F body is NOT included.]

[Note that the hood ~does~ fit properly on the lens in ~both~ forward and reversed positions (as illustrated below), ~but~ it just ~barely~ fits along with the lens inside the original Tokina lens pouch, and it does ~not~ fit when mounted on the lens inside the styrofoam box liner -- it would seem as if the hood was always sold separately from the lens, since the OEM packaging and the OEM pouch for the hood do not accommodate the dedicated hood.]

In a bit of an apples and oranges comparison, there is a favorable review of the Tokina AT-X 60-120/2.8, matching it up against two respected Rokkor primes, at The Rokkor Files - 60-120mm f/2.8 Tokina AT-X Review .

Here are some photos captured with this lens, which will, among other things, show that it is not just a "portrait lens"

The following sets of images were all taken (handheld) with a Tokina AT-X 60-120/2.8 on a K-3, and were minimally processed -- i.e., the 100% 1:1 crops were only slightly compressed after cropping, while the large "thumbnails" were only downsized and then slightly compressed -- there were no edit adjustments or corrections, no sharpening, etc.:

Sunflower - 60mm - f/ 2.8 - downsized from original image -

[The wreath images below, at 60mm and 120mm focal lengths, were taken from two different distances, to keep image sizes approximately the same.]

Wreath - 60mm - f/ 2.8 - downsized from original image -

Wreath - 120mm - f/ 2.8 - downsized from original image -

Wreath - 60mm - f/ 2.8 - 100% 1:1 crop from original image -

Wreath - 120mm - f/ 2.8 - 100% 1:1 crop from original image -

[The above images were all taken wide open at f/2.8, while all of the following were taken at f/8 (first at 60mm and then at 120mm).]

A Boatload of Boats - 60mm - f/8 - downsized from original image -

Several Boats - 60mm - f/8 - 100% 1:1 crop from original image -

Seawall and House - 60mm - f/8 - downsized from original image -

House - 60mm - f/8 - 100% 1:1 crop from original image -

Boats, Bridge, and Houses - 120mm - f/8 - downsized from original image -

Boats - 120mm - f/8 - 100% 1:1 crop from original image -

Bridge and Houses - 120mm - f/8 - 100% 1:1 crop from original image -

Clock and Flag - 120mm - f/8 - downsized from original image -

Clock - 120mm - f/8 - 100% 1:1 crop from original image -

Flag - 120mm - f/8 - 100% 1:1 crop from original image -

Egret and Gull - 120mm - f/8 - downsized from original image -

Egret - 120mm - f/8 - 100% 1:1 crop from original image -

Gull - 120mm - f/8 - 100% 1:1 crop from original image -

Certainly, a 60-120mm lens is not much of a birding lens, but I do think that the 1:1 / 100% 1:1 crops of the birds do show that the lens is capable of pretty good resolution.

[And, obviously, all of these images would ordinarily benefit from some additional post-processing...]
