[SOLD] FS: Pentax-A* 300mm f4.0

Just thought I'd offer this up here before sending it off to Eekbay.

Pentax-A* 300mm f4.0.

I bought this 2nd hand around 18 months ago and hardly used it. Its in good condition with some small marks on the mount flange and has a couple of scuffs on the retractable lens hood. Front and rear elements are spotless and aperture blades are snappy and oil free. I had this lens tested/checked by Pentax Japan early in 2006 and it was given a clean bill of health.

Comes with original rear and after market front lens caps.

Last one on Eekbay that I can see went for USD $716. Looking for USD $675 plus postage and insurance if wanted.

Can post pics of the lens or the invoice from the Pentax service if anyone is interested.

bazz.

Which exact lens is this?

I can't seem to find this lens on ebay. Also, not sure exactly what model it is. Are they still selling this lens, if not what has replaced it?

Interested. Thanks...

The last one I saw was item number 260086595272

A little info on the lens can be found at Boz's site and a couple of comments are at Stan's site.

The short version however is that this lens was replaced with the Pentax-F* 300mm f4.5 in the late 80's which was then replaced by the Pentax-FA* 300mm f4.5 in the early 90's.

I've just acquired the later lens and am selling this one to recoup some costs.

cheers,
bazz.

i've got this lens. the objective lens is VERY damaged. it looks like someone tried to clean it with a brick.

if i don't go above f8, it's sharp as a tack even with the damage.

i'd say 500usd is a good price for it. over that i'm not sure. it is however a VERY good lens and at 600usd, i'd probably get my wallet out.
i found it a difficult lens to get use to due to fact that it'd very front heavy. but the results are outstanding once you do get use to it.
here's a shot at f4 at about 30meters.

Drool......

I've been lusting after one of these for years. Such a nice compact lens.

Afraid 300mm prices have gone a bit silly though. I think the new DA 300mm might calm things down a bit. I know the 300mm A* is a superb lens but 700 dollars is a lot. I'm sure someone will be able to afford it though, especially as it is in good condition rather than scratched on the front!

I hope the new DA is as compact and as good quality as the A* and M* though! Wonder what the RRP will be on them?

Roy, I have to say that after 30 years making a living in photography, the condition of the front element on this lens made me kinda sick (in a funny sort of way). I have to say that I really liked the quality of the images that you produced from the lens and quite frankly I was amazed.

Hmmm.... and I worry someone will get upset if there is a tiny little dust speck or two in a long lens that I might sell. Well, I'll stop worrying and mark this post.

Sorry for the crappy lens, happy for the results you get

stephen,
when i saw it in the shop here in town i had my doubts. i did however have my DS with me and took a range of photo tests with it. i was back the next day to pay the $75 it was listed at. when 1st using it i was getting intermitent good shots and blamed the lens. it was operater error and not the lens. her's a zoo shot at iso1600

and another f4 shot

i have to say that i really love this lens especially for the price paid.

Roy,

Overall the lens looks like it is doing the job. The reality is that you have access the f stop range most people use anyway, so there is not much to loss there. do you find that you get a little purple fringing or CA from the lens on the DSLR?

sir_bazz,
do i get a cut??

stephen, i have to be careful with the suns position. because of the damage the lens flares easily. no CA that has bothered me. it's a superb lens.
