Looks like it has earned those dents and dings. All of my super telephoto lenses have similar marks on them - you can probably derive some sort of metric on how much fun I have had with a lens by counting the number of dings on the barrel.

Pretty much--although it mostly stayed on the porch, protected from the elements, when not in use. That eagle, taken at Conowingo Dam, was from one of the few ventures out in the field.

Given my deserved reputation for clumsiness, I was reluctant to move it much--and, besides, if I was patient, interesting things were sure to happen in the tree. Also, given our climate, I'm wary of keeping lenses in cases, which I sort of regard as fungus farms.

I agree. Manufacturers seem to have issues with the concept of subtlety when it comes to their uber expensive super telephoto lenses, which they place in cases that in a tolkeinesque one ring style call out "Steal me" with the brand name emblazoned in big red lettering on the case for all the world to see.

Is it strange when I read of LBA addicts and their struggles, I hear the voice of Gollum?

Good luck with the sale Dave - difficult to part with a lens like this but I think you still have a couple of other little gems tucked away for any prospective buyers - you won't find a nicer fellow to deal with.

Absolutely true. It so happens I have another of his lenses in my armory

Congratulations to you and I’ll put my gear to sell back in the drawer. DK if it’s drat or phew.

The thing is I've had very good luck in putting sold lenses into the hands of people whose work I've admired and, if this deal goes through, it will be no exception.
