Zeiss Killer - Super Takumar 1.4/50 Eight Element 50mm f/1.4 lens

Asking Price
175.00 USD

Item Location
Daytona Beach FL (United States)

Item Description
This is a collector's lens and that is reflected in the price. It is the rare early version of the Pentax Super Takumar 50mm f/1.4 lens. This is the eight element version rumored to be produced to challenge the Zeiss lenses of the same period. Folk lore has it that Pentax lost money on each of these lenses it sold. If you are not a collector and interested in a Takumar 50mm f/1.4 I have several 7 element versions of this lens in great shape available for between $75 and $100

The price on this particular lens is $175 which includes shipping within the lower 48 states.

I've owned a couple copies of this exact lens. I've also owned MANY Zeiss 50mm lenses (still own a couple). I'd sure be interested to learn where you read about this Pentax lens being a "Zeiss Killer". I've never heard that before about this lens.

It was marketed that way in the 60s too. My Grandfather had one (RIP) and he spoke of this 'better than Zeiss' claim made at the time.

If you dig deeply enough there are several articles on the web about this lens, but like I said you have to dig. Please note that I am not making the claim, but the claim is part of the legendary status of this particular lens that makes it a collector's item. Here is one such article, there are many others.

I just read the article. This author claimed that this Pentax 50mm lens was designed to surpass the IQ of both the Zeiss Planar 50's and the Leica 50 Summicron of this era.

One needs to keep in mind the time frame involved here - mid 1960's. Back then, Zeiss 50mm lenses were no where near as good as they are today. I'm not surprised that this old Pentax 50 was considered to be better than the Zeiss Planar lenses of this era, because it very probably was.

However, the Leica 50mm f/2 Summicron is another story all together. The 50mm Summicron of this era was a spectacular performer. So good in fact that it still shines today on the Pentax K-1 camera.

Check out the last 9 photos in the Leica group here on Pentax forums to see 9 photos taken with 1960's era Leica 50mm Summicrons on Pentax K-1 cameras. The 1964 Leica 50mm Summicron is an outstanding lens (I own 2), producing what I believe to be the best colors of any of the over 40 different 50mm lenses that I've tested on Pentax K-1 cameras.

So, Zeiss Planar killer = YES .......... Leica Summicron killer = NO

ok. The Zeiss 50mm 1.8 pancolar from the early 60s is a very respectable lens indeed. I wouldn't be so harsh on their relative performance.

I'm entitled to my opinions. No?

By the way, I did own and test the Zeiss 50mm 1.8 pancolar lens, and was not that impressed.

Of course you are. I have simply retorted with an alternative opinion

Best of luck with the sale of this fine lens. I can attest to its better optical perforamnce over the 7 element design. Pity it isn't SMC - perhaps the only fault!

Incorrect, you went beyond retorting an "alternative opinion" on lenses when you called my statement "harsh".

And for you to claim the Zeiss 50mm 1.8 pancolar lens is any where nearly as good as a modern day 50/1.4 Milvus (let alone the Otus) is very wrong.

Before this gets out of hand I am going to refrain from posting anymore on a for sale thread that is not mine.

Again - all the best with the sale of this fine lens. Cheerio
