.
I just read the article. This author claimed that this Pentax 50mm lens was designed to surpass the IQ of both the Zeiss Planar 50's and the Leica 50 Summicron of this era.
One needs to keep in mind the time frame involved here - mid 1960's. Back then, Zeiss 50mm lenses were no where near as good as they are today. I'm not surprised that this old Pentax 50 was considered to be better than the Zeiss Planar lenses of this era, because it very probably was.
However, the Leica 50mm f/2 Summicron is another story all together. The 50mm Summicron of this era was a spectacular performer. So good in fact that it still shines today on the Pentax K-1 camera.
Check out the last 9 photos in the
Leica group here on Pentax forums to see 9 photos taken with 1960's era Leica 50mm Summicrons on Pentax K-1 cameras. The 1964 Leica 50mm Summicron is an outstanding lens (I own 2), producing what I believe to be the best colors of any of the over 40 different 50mm lenses that I've tested on Pentax K-1 cameras.
So, Zeiss Planar killer = YES .......... Leica Summicron killer = NO
