Price on Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm f/3.5 (v2) from Tokina is reduced from $75 to $69. I am planning for fast sale before I push my next bunch of gear out.

That's a terrific deal. Those Viv S1 70-210's are probably the best Manual-Focus zooms you can get for Pentax, built very well, super sharp, good colors. Heavy, but there's a lot of expensive glass in there.

Jay, much thanks for the comments. Among the first three versions of Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm zooms recommended by Mark Robert -- v1 from Kiron, this v2 from Tokina and v3 from Komine, I prefer the Tokina version over the Kiron for its lighter weight at 710g as compared to 879g in v1:kiron and 860g in v3:Komine. And the tele shots from the Tokina version is sharper than that of Kiron, I would say the sharpness has an edge on the Tokina, a bit better than the Kiron. But in terms of close up, the Kiron is better with not only a better close up ratio in 1:2.2, but perhaps better coating and others. Overall, the Tokina is a great zoom that is worth one's consideration.

I am selling bunch of gear to raise fund for the unthinkable -- DA* zoom in 50-135 f/2.8 zoom , another system in another brand undecided among NikonD200/D300/D90/Canon40D/50D/5D, or a possible upgrade to K20D. All things considered, I love Pentax but I have not tried the best in Pentax in limited and DA* zoom, hence the selling to fund the unplanned. The other items that will come after this may include all of my M42 lens, and the truly unthinkable in selling of my K10D if I decide to upgrade to K20D.

Back to sale topic , I find one relevant discussion on the Vivitar Series 1 from Tokina in this thread

Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm F/3.5 - Photo.net Forum

and the reply from Russ shares my take on the lens -- it is lighter and sharper than v1 from Kiron but not as good as v3 from Komine with 'A' aperture, but the v2 from Tokina does well overall with constant fast f/3.5 aperture and it has beautiful metal body and optics that can rival the current zooms. The fast f/3.5 aperture may become useful for better manual focusing in dimmer light than f/4.0 in the v3:Komine version in the Tele end at 210mm.

Thank you Walter, I have my best time in meeting Walter locally in a Fry's electronic store. I love talking to Walter who has K10D/K20D experience. Walter has great photos in his signatures and he has experience with Canon 5D and mark1 (forget the exact name). My pleasure to meet another great Pentaxian who has experience and is open to other brands. And I show Walter my M42 collection with 3 lens and my M42 blog posts. And I have planned October M42 Festival -- meaning that I will kick up my M42 lens blades into high gear in October.

Hin

Price reduced

Price is further dropped from $75 -> $69 -> $65 and I will add in a compatible free lens case if bought in this weekend.

The free case can be seen in this picture:

I have placed this lens on hold, likely to withdraw later today. I tested the lens further yesterday and broke the Vivitar 1 labeled lens cap. That lens cap is not strong, once I drop it to the floor, the inner plastic spring broke, it looks fixable though.

And I tested the lens in JapanTown Spring Festival. I have Back focus and Front focus on the lens. Guess what, all are user errors. Oh man, my manual focus skills are down with poor eyesight and impatient shutter click.

The lens is a beauty and when no user error are in the way, it is the sharpest monkey around in my bag. I have never used a manual focus zoom that I find it as charm as this lens in terms of quick focusing. The f/3.5 is also a blessing. Pictures are very sharp as compared to my other zooms experience

I am withdrawing this lens from sale. I plan to buy the v3 version of Vivitar Series1 when I find one that I can afford and perhaps do my own comparison between v2 and v3. And I am undecided if I should sell my Pentax DA 50-200 f/4.0-5.6 instead. I will close this thread when I am final on the decision.

Thanks,
Hin
