Asahi Pentax Stereo Adapter and Viewer set in box M42 REDUCED

PentaxForums.com Marketplace Listing

Item for Sale
Asahi Pentax Stereo Adapter and Viewer set in box M42

Asking Price
60 USD 50 USD

Item Location
Utah (United States)

Item Description
Selling a spare from my collection. In good used condition.

Adapter has engraving to base. Box shows wear.

Update - I just tried to mount this on a couple of lenses and it fits perfectly on an old Pentax-F 35-80mm - which actually has a 49mm filter thread. The 1.1.8/55 engraved on the mount clearly references the specific lens it was designed for.

Dumb questions:
K-mount? (Old-style box)
Works on digital (prints from digital file)?

I've never used this - nor did I know it existed until I saw this thread - but I see no reason it wouldn't work if you have appropriate eyewear or just look at it cross-eyed – although that may require you to swap the left and right halves of the frame. It's basic stereo 3D. The viewer design makes me think it's designed for slides, though, and that would probably work best - so you'd want developed positive/E6/slide film to put the viewer to good use.

I think it just attaches on the filter ring of a lens.

Edit: Just found the user manual online. Attaches to the lens - comes in 49mm and 52mm versions.

Hello - It's allegedly a 55mm mount, but fits on a lens i had to hand with a 49mm filter size. It pops over the front of the lens then is tightened on with the knurled screw.

I've never used it on digital, its part of my old film collection. I'd agree with Sykil - I think it's more designed for slides, at least the viewer part is.

Thanks. I have all the K lernses so I must have a 55mm thread 52mm lens in there somewhere but I thought theyb were all 53mm. I might consider buying this as a toy to see if I can project a jpeg taken with the converter attached then view the projection through the viewer, but I’ll have to think about it.

What diameter thread does it fit - 49mm or 52mm?

This looks like the M42 version and was designed for use with the 55/1.8 Takumar (49mm filter thread).

I have the K Series version of the stereo viewer and it is designed for 52mm filter thread 50mm-55mm standard lenses. (K55/1.8, K50/1.4..)

There was also a later M Series version for 49mm filter thread lenses.

The viewer only worked with mounted slides.

Phil.

The viewer obviously requires mounted slides, but the shooting end of it will work with digital. And hey, Ektachrome's back...

Getting the field of view right is important, so a 50mm lens on full frame is just right (35mm on APS-C is flakier in my experience).
It's also important to get the depth of field right to make the separation visible (I think APS-C is flakier because of the depth of field).

My best success with APS-C was with a Takumar 35mm f2... Best on the K1 is the 50mm f1.7, though keep in mind that you'll have to realign everything on lenses that rotate the front element when focusing...

I've had reasonable luck printing out the resulting double images on 5x7 inch paper and viewing them in an old-fashioned stereo postcard viewer.

How does it work? Does it produce two horizontally squashed images, or two normal images in portait orientation?
If images are not compressed, then it limits photographer to portrait orientation, right?
If they are compressed, then landscape orientation is preserved, at cost of horizontal resolution.

So - is it a kind of anamorphic lens to compress image or not?

I've never actually used it - it's just part of my collection.
