That's some funky looking focusing action.
Is there some double sliding going on, or is that a built in hood that slides out?

Tim, that's double sliding action. The top focuses the lens. The bottom is your macro extension which goes from 1:20 to1:1. The front lens element is so deeply recessed (over 2 inches!) that it would never need a hood, built in or otherwise. It's really an excellent design. Thanks for asking.

turning the focusing ring brings the inner barrel, with element forward. I'm pretty sure most macro lenses are like this...

Hey Jeff,

Payment sent.

I have its bigger brother Vivitar 135mm f/2.8 Close Focusing, also by Komine, but with only 1:2 magnification. My 13 yr old son is getting more serious into macro photography. I also have a screw-mount Mamiya 60mm f/2.8 1:1 macro (also by Komine I heard) but my son doesn't like to mess around with the adapter. This lens will be a nice gift.

Regards

Edit: The Mamiya is made by Tomioka, not Komine.

I've got this lens in an M42 mount and it's great. I'm sure you'll be happy with it!

I would bet the Mamiya 60mm f2.8 1:1 is by Mamiya. I know Mamiya made lenses for other companies over the years, Nikon, Rollei, Ricoh, Sears, but I don't know of anyone making lenses for them.

Edit: As a matter of fact, that Mamiya 60mm macro was one of the first m42 to get down to 1:1. Pentax had the 50mm f4 macro-tak preset that got to 1:1 in 1966, but the subsequent super macro-tak were 1:2.

I just checked my notes. The Mamiya 60mm 1:2.8 macro is by Tomioka. Yashica also rebarged this lens to sell under Yashinon name.

Some more info

I don't agree with your notes. Mamiya has never been known to have 35mm slr lens made out of house from the time they started making them in 1961 until they quit the 35mm in the early 80s.

Mamiya 35mm Forum - Who makes Mamiya Sekor M42 lenses?

Edit: Be sure to read the entire thread though. If Ron Herron can't answer the question regarding Mamiya 35mm lenses, there aren't many who can.
