[SOLD] Tokina AT-X 400mm f/5.6 AF

PentaxForums.com Marketplace Listing

Item for Sale
Tokina AT-X 400mm f/5.6 AF

Asking Price
$600 US

Item Description
I actually thought I'd never sell this lens but here it goes. I bought this lens in May'07 for my trip to Alaska and I have to say that it has been incredible. It focuses fairly fast, is very sharp and is light enough to easily handhold with (especially with SR).

I think a lot of people have seen me post photos from it but if you haven't I'll attach some below. Also feel free to visit my pbase site: palmor's Photo Galleries at pbase.com and visit the Bird and Animal galleries for lots of shots taken with this lens.

Now for the bad. When I bought this lens it had a small amount of fungus in the front element. The fungus is dead (it hasn't grown) and doesn't affect image quality at all. I know this will probably turn a lot of people off (and that is OK). I've included a photo from when I got the lens in May'07 so you can see that it hasn't grown.

Other then that the lens is in perfect condition. If you have any questions about it let me know.

Here are the photos:
Photo from May'07 showing the fungus:

And one from today (it is really hard to get a good photo of it)

Impressive pics.

Just out of curiosity, how does the Tokina compare with the Sigma 70-200 2.8 + 2x TC that you are also selling (at 400mm obviously )?

What's with people posting all these beautiful long lenses at reasonable prices while my money is tied up getting a camera body?

I've got an old lens with a LOT more fungus than that, all over its internal elements, out to the center, and it doesn't seem to affect optical quality at all. As long as you keep it from spreading to other lenses I don't see why that tiny bit on yours should be a big deal for most people. The light passing through that little bit of the front element is probably outside the portion of the image circle that hits the sensor anyways.

That is a very beautiful lens & that small amount of fungus should not affect how fast you'll sell this lens, especially at that nice price.

If I had not just purchased camera parts, lenses & some accessories I would put a request in.

The Tokina is superior, but not by a ton. I'd say that it is slightly sharper, but does focus faster. It is also MUCH lighter. You really can't go wrong with either setup.

Thanks Palmor. I've actually bought a Sigma 100-300mm F4 recently, I'll try it with my Tamron 1.4x MC4 TC (another birding combo )
