Well, yes, I can vouch for that. Somewhere in the late 80's, with the low-level war between South Africa and SWAPO still ongoing in northern Namibia and southern Angola, I was at a conference at the Etosha Game Reserve (magnificent place!). With some souvenirs in my main luggage, I decided (unwisely, but hey, it's only a lens..) to put the squeeze trigger unit and 400mm Tele-Tessar in my carry-on luggage, leaving the 600mm barrel and shoulder stock carefully packed in the main luggage.
Well, the guy at the X-Ray machine at Windhoek airport took one look and immediately two tough-looking SA Defence Force guys escorted me to a room, me carrying the bag, they at separate angles behind me with R1's levelled. I've never been so scared, ever. Period. Once in the room, I had to talk very quickly and then they let me gingerly take out the squeeze trigger unit, those R1's never moving a millimeter. Once they figured out what it was, after some careful demonstration, and attaching the 400mm lens (big glass!), they just shook their heads and let me get on the plane, with the suggestion that this was maybe not my brightest moment. I agreed - it could have all gone horribly wrong.
Anyway, I love this lens, still have it, and may never sell it. Took some amazing slides with it, some of which I've scanned and they're still crisp and sharp.
