[SOLD] (EU) SMC Pentax 1:2.8/30mm (K30mm/2.8)

PentaxForums.com Marketplace Listing

Item for Sale
(EU) SMC Pentax 1:2.8/30 (K30/2.8)

Asking Price
EUR 150

Item Description
I have for sale the famous and rare SMC K 30/2.8 in USER condition. Because of this I will offer the lens for a very low price although it is one of the rarest K-series lenses.

First, the bad: the coating has a scratch (see photos). The lens has a lot of usage marks and even some nicks. There's a very small amount of dust inside.

The good: it's cheap. It comes with the original front cap. The focusing is buttery smooth like my other K-series lenses, no drag or play at all. The diaphragm is clean and very snappy. The scratch does not have an effect on the pictures. The lens is sharp, has a good bokeh and is a joy to use. See samples below!

Buy it if you want to use the lens rather than to put it in your cupboard for collecting purposes. It's used well, and for a reason: the previous owner liked it to death.

Here are the samples. Most are wide open, but the chairs/house shot was stopped down to f/8. The second hibiscus flower shot was also stopped down to f/8.

Finally, a 100% crop of the lens, wide open (!)

An excellent lens with quite unimpressive specs (just 30mm, and not especially fast - does it really matter?), but a joy to use. And look at the results!

Slightly off-topic, but I wonder just how optically different this lens is from the 28/2.8. 2mm doesn't seem like much.

Great pics btw!

Let's take a look-see:

K 30mm:

M 28mm (no K version ever made?):

It appears there are some rather obvious differences.

Thanks a lot for those lens diagrams ftpaddict. Superficially they seem quite different, but there are only two elements with different types from the 28/2.8, the first and second. All the rest are at least the same kind, though shaped and placed differently. But that's still very surprising to me, since I didn't think there would be any significant difference.

Now I'm going to go check out the 100/2.8 and 105/2.8 :P

I think for these two lenses (K30/2.8 & M28/2.8) the angle of view on a film camera was more of a selling point than the difference in the optics.

For the 28mm FL the angle of view is 75 degrees
For the 30mm FL the angle of view is 72 degrees
For the 35mm FL the angle of view is 62 degrees

Pentax created the 30mm FL for people who could not decide on a 28mm or 35mm, "An Excellent Compromise" as Pentax called it.

Phil.

I believe the K30/2.8 is a much better lens than the M28/2.8

Check Yoshihiko Takinami's resolution test
http://www.takinami.com/yoshihiko/photo/lens_test/pentax_28-30.html

He also said this
"I like K30/2.8 better than any 28mm lens Pentax ever made."

Much like the DA21/3.2. (68 degrees). Though in this case I think they did it not to give the customer a choice but as an alternative to offering both 18mm and 24mm primes.

Yes it’s all marketing in the end, which drives what FLs are available.
Pentax had a few odd ones in the film days that were not that popular and eventually deleted them in the mid eighties. There were K and/or M versions of the 18mm, 30mm, 120mm & 150mm, but never an A.

Phil.
