[SOLD] (K-Mount) SMC 200mm F2.5

PentaxForums.com Marketplace Listing

Item for Sale
(K-Mount) SMC 200mm F2.5

Asking Price
$450 USD with case ($425 USD for lens only)

Item Description
This is a very nice copy of a highly regarded lens. I bought it (used, of course) back in March but just don't reach for it when I want to shoot at that FL. I guess I'm just addicted to auto-aperture and AF. Besides, I've just bought a very expensive lens and this is part of the "making ends meet" equation. Oh, yeah, it comes with (what I take to be) the original case.

A bump for a rare lens, I wish I can afford it and take that from you. But I have other LBA priorities. If you ever thought about that secret zoom to 400mm, please think of Hin first.

This is one of the rarest 200mm prime with 'A' setting that goes fast at f/2.5. And f/2.5 is odd but in a good way to beat the f/2.8. I am only aware of f/2.0 and f/1.8 in 200mm when it is related to the Canon L lens in the past that Gus mentioned before. Everything else are in f/2.8 as the top and more cheaper manual lens are in f/3.5. So f/2.8 is the top and f/2.5 is outstanding and f/2.0 and f/1.8 are non-existent as far as Pentax 200mm goes -- please correct me if you are aware of other M42 and genius tricks of conversion from good old fast 200mm glasses.

With that small form factor, you can easily couple the 200mm with Pentax-F 1.7x afa and get a good 350mm lens with partial AF and accurate SR focal length.

[update:] It is the K version and it does not have 'A' setting, my fault in jumping in.

Thanks,
Hin

Hin, I don't think this has the 'A' setting.

You're quite right, pcarfan, this is a SMC K lens which does not have the 'A' setting.

Appreciate the bump, Hin!

Hi Jay,

I was going to send you a note that Dave had a K 200/2.5 for sale. I can see that won't be necessary. If you like the 200mm focal length you won't find a sharper lens than this. If I didn't already have one I'd be all over this puppy.

Thank you for the correction. Woww, the K-lens, that would be even more interesting. Though needing the stop-down, the K version is a better built lens than the A version. I should have read it more carefully, sorry about that.

I don't quite know the mystery but it has always been my impressions that the K is more sought after the A version of the same lens, I can attest that with my experience with Pentax 200mm f/4.0 and the Pentax M 200mm f/4.0. Though they look alike but the filter size and build are very different. The K version doesn't have the label of 'K' in the lens label. The back of the lens looks more hollow like a tunnel and the K version has a stronger character for sturdiness. When I see my friend Markus in photo.net posting test images on his K 200mm f/4.0, those test images beat all of my M 200mm f/4.0 test images.

Also, I have similar positive experiences with Pentax K 45-125mm f/4.0. My writing is bad today as the California storm kept me up most of the night and the 6:00am trash pick up didn't help either.

Thanks,
Hin

Bump for Dave's K 200/2.5.

This lens is way too good to be sitting on the sidelines.

I've always lusted after this lens... to be honest, even though it's "sacrilege", I'd like to see how this performs with a decent teleconverter. Sometimes you need that extra reach.

Any chance of knowing about that, Dave?

I don't regard it as sacrilege: the TC option is one of things that makes a fast telephoto attractive (see here). Since I have a DA*300, I've never felt the need with this one but I'll give it a try and post some samples later today or tomorrow.

I like this lens very much.

It shares the similar optics as 135mm k f2.5 and 85mm k f1.8. I am not sure if this is true. But the images out of these lenses are quite unique. I like them very much. Some examples of my kids from this lens, not in the best lightly conditions. It does have slight PF/CA when wide open. It is an issue of many pre digital and pre-AL era lenses. It has not bothered me so far.

Samples

Thanks for the bumps folks! I'd of bumped it myself if I weren't so ambivalent about letting it go ;~)

I resisted putting up samples because Tom's are so much better than mine and one of the reasons I'm willing to selling is because I don't think I can do it justice. But if you're selling a lens, you have to be willing to show samples so here goes.

First is my daughter's profile--wide open. It was cropped from 2:3 portrait to 4:5 portrait and lightly PP-ed .

The El Toro shots are all uncropped & unprocessed except that the first (wide open w/o TC) was brightened a bit)

The next is with my AF 1.7x TC and the last two (who knew that tequilla was good bird bait? ) with the A 2X-S. The TC shots were all at f3.2 (or whatever that is between f2.5 and f4.)

I'd be willing to include the 2x TC with the lens for a package price of $600 btw.
