Stupid question, but what is the difference between the two models?

No no very necessary question.I found that info at mflenses.com

Difference is production date and
Helios 44-2 (38/20), 8 blades, pre-set
44M-6 MC (45/25), 6 blades, auto - JOV

I have both and I find the 44M-6 to have a very different bokeh than the 44-2
The 44-2 has a much smoother bokeh across the range whereas the 44M-6 changes across the arperture range(harsh, circular, smooth).

Having said that, I love and use them both!

let me give some information for a bump.

Helios 44 lens is based on Zeiss Biotar 58/2.

The 44-2 version is prevailing version, was made at Krasnogorsk optical factory KMZ. Has 1 layer coating. Soviet method of resolving power calculation tells us it has 38 lines/mm (center) and 22 lines/mm (border). The lens is good for portraiture and gives nice bokeh.

The MC 44M-6 version was made by Valday optical factory Jupiter after 1980. Has multi-layer coating. It has slighly better resolving power 45/25 (center/border) lines/mm. See JohnBee for the bokeh.

From me - I've used both. They're almost the same in optics and IQ, slighly softer at f/2-2.8 than Supertak 50/1.4 thus good in portraiture. The 44-2 I had was wobbling more than 44M but it's possible due to the age of the lens.

My wobble with the 44-2 comes from the fact that the base is so small that it rides on the actual m42-K adaptor and does not contact the camera mount at all. So on mine the "wobble" comes from how much play there is in the adaptor.

Does that make sense? Either way it is not an issue for how well the lens works.

Having said that, the 44-2 with the pre-set ap is a joy to use... If you are not used to preset ap rings, it takes a few minutes to get used to it, but when you do you dont want to go back....

NoMaD and JohnBee are right... the 44-2 is smoother and a little softer, the 44M6 is sharper and a little more wild in its bokeh in some conditions.

But they are fun and very good lenses... My most used lens this last year.

Helios 44-2

I believe my 44M is closer to the 44M-6
