The 35-70 is a two touch zoom. It is most compact when zoomed to 70mm and focused to infinity. The picture that you see where it is "screwed out" so far is zoomed to 70mm and focused down to 0.25m. That's a closest focusing distance of 0.25m at 70mm! That's pretty good macro. The lens also extends when zoomed to 35mm, but there is a limit to the min focusing distance as you zoom out. You see the green focus distance markings? When zoomed to 35mm, you can't go in that range. So the MFD at 35mm is actually about 0.5m. There is a mechanical limit that doesn't allow you to focus past that.
It's a nice little lens, one of the first that I got after I picked up my K200D & kit lens about a year and a half ago. I used it for a while before moving into some primes. Quite sharp right from f/4 at 35mm, just a tad soft at f/4 70mm, but still quite usable and certainly very nice by f/5.6 and on.
Here is an uncropped shot I took of a flower with this lens, at f/8, i think 70mm at or near the MFD. Shot w/ JPG output (either natural or bright...i don't remember) from K200D. This lens renders a very clean and colorful images.
