I'm trying to understand why this lens look different from others on the net? here are a few samples:

Sigma - Lenses
Amazon.com: Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG APO Macro Telephoto Zoom Lens for Nikon SLR Cameras: Camera & Photo
Sigma 70-300mm APO Zoom

Now I did find similar picture, but is listed as Super II:
Sigma LENS AF 70-300MM F4-5.6 MACRO SUPER II review cheap prices LENS AF 70-300MM F4-5.6 MACRO SUPER II Sigma best buy discount online uk shop

Your version have a gold ring, is this suggesting an EX version? I don't see it available at the Sigmaphoto site though? ... confused...

Thanks for the clarification. On Sigma AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG Macro Super II Telephoto Zoom Lens for Pentax AF - Canoga Camera, the lens is identified as "Sigma AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG Macro Super II Telephoto Zoom Lens for Pentax AF", it has the requisite "APO Macro Super" but is also marked as "DG" and "II", is this yet another version different from yours?

In a nutshell...From what I understand is there are/were 3 versions of the Sigma 70-300 APO Super Macro. They are all pretty much the same optically except the coatings on the lens supposedly got better with each version....the most recent being the Sigma 70-300 APO DG Macro. I had the APO Macro Super II in Canon mount, which looks identical to Gene's lens except the newer one had a red ring instead of a gold ring.

So you had the Sigma 70-300 APO Macro Super (the one Gene's selling here), replaced by the 70-300 APO Macro Super II, which was replaced by the newest version which is the APO Macro DG (supposed to have better coatings to reduce ghosting on digital sensors)

To add confusion...Sigma offered a similar, cheaper lens usually designated 'DL'...which is pretty much junk from what I've heard.

Thanks jgmankos, this is very helpful. As the info is virtually nonexistent, may I ask if you were/are(?) happy with the Super II?

CanogaCamera is selling the APO DG Macro Super II ($210), and DL DG Macro ($140). No listing for the APO DG Macro (without the Super II label).

I was quite happy with it on my 20D...it was a bit of a slow focusing lens though...but still, I'm considering the same lens , or possibly Gene's lens here, for my K10D.

From what I've heard (no first hand experience) you definitely want to stay away from the lenses designated 'DL'.

Sigma's website does not mention a 'APO DG Macro Super II', their most recent lens carries the 'DG' moniker but not the 'Super II'...and Canoga is the only site I've seen it referenced as that. Could be a misprint on their end.

While this isn't my lens, the II was right before the DG version and honestly, I'm curious as to how good the DG version is because I don't know many people that have used that lens.
