[SOLD] Pentax M 85mm f/2 (US/CAN)

PentaxForums.com Marketplace Listing

Item for Sale
Pentax M 85mm f/2

Asking Price
$175 USD + shipping, firm

Item Location
Toronto, ON, Canada

Item Description
Here's a nice SMC Pentax-M 1:2 85mm, and your chance to get it for a bargain price.

The good:
Small, lightweight, fast and cheap! Beautiful rendering wide open, nice and soft for portraits, very sharp stopped down. Very smooth focus and aperture is snappy. Front and rear glass are fine.

The bad:

I've had to mark it "Damaged" for the following reasons, only one of which I was informed of, and another of which I only noticed while taking the pics today!

(1) there are some particles inside, which do not seem to affect image quality--see the pic--they're hard to get a picture of, but clearly visible when looking through the lens.

(2) it doesn't seem to stop down beyond f/11. Though I never would with this lens on a DSLR anyway!

(3) the front cap is cracked on the side--still stays on snugly and protects the front element just fine!

The particles:

The images:

100% crop:

Wide open:

Had a question about this lens so thought I'd clarify here:

- the aperture ring moves all the way to f/22, but the aperture doesn't close down past f/11.
- no other issues with the other apertures using the green button
- that's the reason I didn't notice it--using the green button, the exposures are dead on, even when you set it at f/16 or f/22 (because it's really f/11, so when it stops down to check exposure, it'll actually only stop down to f/11)... does that make sense?

Note that Eric (link) would probably be able to clean the dust and repair the aperture ring/diaphram for less than (probably) $75, maybe less than $50.

(The M 85 f/2 is my favorite MF lens.)

Thanks, Jay!
I remember you liked this lens, and thanks for the link!

I'd like to add that it's perfectly useable from f/2 up to f/11 (and past that, the camera meters properly with the green button, but it's still only f/11), and the specks inside don't seem to affect the image, so I figured somebody might grab it as a bargain lens to be used as such -- I may be wrong!

I only noticed the aperture blades when I was taking pics of the lens, and therefore had to label it damaged... I don't think the previous owner noticed. Has anybody ever used an 85 past f/5.6 anyway?

If you don't get any local interest put me on the interested list, it is pretty painless to send to an ozzy. I treasure the 24 mm I bought of Jay.
Cheers Mark
