don't know if I want to buy from ebay, all the ones listed are from Japan. Do I pay customs? How does it work?

Japanese sellers on Ebay are generally well regarded and are the most likely source of this relatively rare lens. Hopefully a US based member can advise on customs duties etc. Here in the UK we would have to pay customs duty, sales tax and a fee from our postal service for handling the transaction. Japanese sellers are unlikely to get involved in false declarations to help you avoid such costs.

have never had to pay any custom fees for items bought outside the US

Assuming the seller is able to provide all the necessary information, as well as attaching a US Customs and Border Protection declaration form to the package, you should have no trouble. If the package value is under $800, it will likely be processed with no additional fees.

I purchased mine from a Japanese merchant via eBay.
This was about ~~six~~ seven years ago, and the fact I remember little about the transaction must mean it was ‘routine’.
I paid. They shipped. I received.

Got the lens couple of days ago, was well packed. Lens had some finger printing and some water drying type marks. Thought it might be from inside, but cleaned it up and looks good. Indoor pictures looked good.
