Ice Crystals?

How would I approach taking pictures of ice crystals? Trying to go up to one and use a macro and hope for the best?

Typically you don't want to use flash. That's the only recommendation I can think of

Wet a glass jar and stick it in the freezer. Something photo worthy is bound to form. Your working time may be quite short though. Another thing you could try is shaving some ice on to a clear or contrasting dish to make some snow. Again, working time will be short. Put your 50 on your TC and shoot away.
