Macro of Black Insects....Lost Cause?

My backyard here doesnt seem to have any of the typical multi coloured insects...yesterday I saw a bug, and like the ants, and the other bugs i saw the other day, it was pitch black. All details were lost, and given the dark background it was standing on....

Are these bugs a lost cause? I tried flashing it, and i got a reflection instead.

I really dont know what to do with them, short of throwing a bucket of multicoloured paint on their glossy black carapaces. Worst, i cant get a lock , and i get a lot of lost pictures >_<

Anyone with experience? The first picture does look bright enough, but i had to pump the exposure setting on the raw file to the maximum. And now its apparent i missed my dof too.
Any suggestions welcome.

ARe you using a flash, as in not th eonboard one? Try to diffuse the flash and use lots of light. You also need way more DOF than you have there.
