Macro Inspiration

Hey guys, I recently acquired my Panagor 90mm and I was itching to use it yesterday, so I set off yesterday to a creek right behind my backyard. After a solid 1 hour of walking around I couldn't find ANY insects or even flowers to photograph.

More then likely this is due to the fact that it's the middle of winter here in Australia.

So my question is to all you Macro photographers, where do you get your inspiration to shoot during Winter?

strobist macro

Perhaps objects that are not from the outside.

I did a quick search on flickr for "macro strobist" and you will get some ideas.

If you are not using flash, then perhaps some overcast winter light will help with your subjects.

examples from the winter when I first got into macro

Here are a few of my first macros. I got into macro in the past winter.

Older cameras are a lot of fun to explore as is working with light.

There is always your fireplace

Or letters. This was on a coaster and taken with two strobes that glanced the surface of the coaster.

I was able to practice and learn about flash and light before the outdoor season started.

Good Luck!

In my home are WAY too many artifacts. Many of those are suitable for photographing at various distances, including quite close. Even without tchochkes, most structures are filled with details and textures worthy of your lens. If you have any compliant humans or other animals nearby, macro-shoot them too. Don't forget toes.
