Vacation

I am heading out on vacation in a few days, just wondering what i should be taking for camera gear. I have:

k100-d super
Tamron 70-300mm
sigma 18-250mm
Pentax 10-17mm fish eye
Tamron 90mm Macro
Pentax Af 360 fgz flash
af 2x converter

Can't take it all, going on the plane. Any suggestions??

I suggest that more info about the vacation would be helpful.

The all-around vacation system is the k100-d super + sigma 18-250mm. That is the smaller package with the wider range.

Yes, yes indeed. Where are you going and what are you going to take pictures of?

Also, how many lenses will fit in your bags? It's nice to know if we're talking about lens or three.

Ah, Sorry!!! Heading to Southern Quebec for a couple of weeks and then jumping over to Banff, AB for another week for some hiking. Think I might try and take them all.

I think the 18-250 will cover many bases for you. What seems missing is a fast low light lens.

I'd bring:

the 18-250
The fish-eye if you're into that (you probably are _
the Marco if your significant other is patient with you
I'd skip the 70-300 because most of what you coul do with it you coul do with the 18-250.

The flash depending on your planned photo ops.

Where exactly in southern Quebec are you going? The province is pretty large, "south" can be a lot of things :P

Leave the 70-300, macro, flash and converter.

the Old Town itself is great, and can be enough for many people. You'll be arriving during the Summer Music Festival (Accueil :: Festival d'été de Québec) so you might want to grab a pass and seea few shows. There are many public entertainers sprad all over the city, often quite good. At 9:30 PM you can go and see the "Image Mill" in the port, ask around (it's Moulin à Images in French) and people will direct you. Cirque du Soleil also have a free show most days a week, at dusk.

I recommend walking/rolleblading/biking on the champlain boardwalk, a new (2008) park along the St-Laurent river, beautiful to behold and well organised.

If you like nature, a tour towards the Montmorency waterfall is great, as is a tour of Orleans island (you'll need a car). there are multiple provicial parks around the city, bike trails, etc. A few good museums in town, of course.

As for photo ops, the Old town at night is gorgeous, and by day too while you're at it. As for the rst, it depends on your style.

Enjoy your stay!

Greetings from the USA 4-Corners region

I've been car-tripping for a few weeks now, with 25+ lenses and the AF360 packed. My day bag usually holds just my K20D and DA10-17, DA18-250, M28/2.8, FA50/1.4, MacTak 50/4, Zenitar 16/2.8, Nikkor 85/2. Around Grand Canyon and Prescott, Arizona, and Santa Fe and Taos, New Mexico, I almost exclusively used the 18-250 and Zenitar 16, and sometimes the FA50. (While in San Francisco's Chinatown I mostly used the Nikkor 85.) But I've been rushed, not to mention hot and tired. I'll slow down and cool off now, and use all my glass in its turn. And maybe I'll repack, replace the 10-17 and MacTak 50 and Nikkor 85 with my Vivitar 90/2.8 macro for casual use.

What should/shouldn't you take to Quebec? As suggested above, leave the TC and 70-300 behind. Definitely take the 10-17 and 18-250. (I use the Zenitar 16 as it's rather faster than the 10-17 at that focal length -- outdoors or braced, the 10-17 is great.) If you intend to shoot macro and/or favor 90mm as a short tele, take the Tamron. If you think you'll need the flash, take it. (Mine sees very little use.) Also as mentioned above, you're short on fast glass. It's good to have at least one prime that's f/2 or faster. Many cheap manual lenses in the 50-58mm range fit the bill. Have fun!

Well I am out here in Quebec, and found I would have liked to bring my kit lens as well!! I don't care much for my 18-250 as it is hard to hold still even though it has the optical stabalizer. Find I need to carry the tripod every where. Other than that the scenery is beautiful. Out in the rural areas right now. Will post pics at a later date.
