Advice/experience on shooting Rock 'n Roll dancers...

Looks like I, along with 2 other photographers, am going to do 2 long days of shooting our National Senior Rock n Roll competition. Of course it's indoors, unsure of lighting levels yet at the venue. I'm imagining I'll be using my Sigma 70-200/2.8 most, but also have a 50/1.4, 35/2 and a 24/2 on the way. Also Sigma 17-70/2.8-4.5 and P 18-55/3.5-5.6.

I'm guessing my flash, AF540, will be used most/all the time.

The room is 1495m² (3 basketball courts), with a ceiling of 9.1-12m (30'-39'). It's a multi-purpose room naturally. Lighting should be at the better end of gym lighting.

Any solid advice/experiences with this sort of shooting you can share to help prepare me? It's about a month until the event.

And I may have to shoot in jpg, not sure yet. Any ideas on best jpeg settings? I never understood sharpness/fine sharpness settings for a start!

White balance may be tricky, though with the flash may be able to cope with it, though I was thinking of trying a few without flash.

National Senior Rock n Roll competition! Just guess but you can probably forget flash and posibly your camera. Are you an invited photog? If not call them a ead of time and get the rules.

Sounds like an interesting gig. I imagine that many of your sports-shooting skills will transfer. Is there a dance hall that you can visit beforehand to test out some techniques?

If it's a festive atmosphere I'd definitely try dragging the shutter to capture some of the ambiance. It also sounds like a situation I'd shoot in M-mode - get a good read of the ambient and let the flash capture the subjects. If the light changes, the green button is your friend.

I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for. You are already quite accomplished, so this may be rudimentary.

My $.02...hope this helps.

Thanks, anything helps, even reinforcing what I'm already thinking! I think I was asked because of the sports shooting actually, they thought I'd handle the moving subjects.

Green button - hmmm. I just never use that sucker! I'd better do some reading.
