It is official. Netcraft has now confirmed: Pentax is dying

One more crippling bombshell hit the already beleaguered Pentax community when IDC confirmed that Pentax market share has dropped yet again, now down to less than 3 percent. Coming on the heels of a recent Netcraft survey which plainly states that Pentax has lost more market share, this news serves to reinforce what we've known all along. Pentax is collapsing in complete disarray, as fittingly exemplified by failing dead last in the recent opinion and comprehensive camera sales test.

A spoof on a long-standing computer geek joke. Those that read Slashdot will recognize it.

Just to set one thing straight: Asahi Pentax never was owned by Honeywell. Of course, they worked together at one point, but that's about it. Until the purchase of Pentax by Hoya it still was a family-owned company.
Thanks for the clarification... Regardless though. Pentax is neither dead nor dying.

Pentax is neither dead nor dying. It's Undead, therefore making it an immortal.

Pentax needs to market this angle. "Pentax, the preferred camera of attractive vampires everywhere."

While I'd love to see Pentax continue on, I'm much more concerned about the survival of the K-mount. If I had to use some other maker's body with my Pentax lenses, I could live with that.

yeah, but that would mean a mirrorless camera is needed, right? Also, the ability to turn off DFS might be important too for those "low light" shots taking by the light-of-the-moon...

p.s. Pentax has been both an independant company and a part of larger companies on and off for it's entire history... Asahi, Honeywell, now Hoya. NO BIG DEAL!
Asahi was the original name of the company.
Honeywell was the US importer for a time.

Asahi Optcial Company adopted the name 'Pentax' for its cameras because of the extraordinary success of the "Asahi Pentax" camera released in 1957 similar to the name 'Takumar' was applied to lenses made by Asahi Optical Company. That's why AOC was on the prism of the venerable K1000 except for the 90s version. With the Advent of the K-mount in 1975, Asahi Optical started using the Pentax name on lenses as well as bodies.
