Nimh AA's and altitude?

I just got back from an extended backpacking trip that involved a lot of altitude changes and I noticed some curious behaviour from my Nimh batteries. At high elevations (7200 feet) they would read as mear empty and when we would drop down a thousand feet or so they would read as half full. Now some of this can be ascribed to temperature changes, but I was wondering if anybody else had experienced similar behaviour?
