Is this necessary to have for your dslr?

Hi fellow Pentaxians,
I will be purchasing a K-5 in January. Is it necessary to purchase an extended warranty for the camera? If so which one? Thanks.

I bought a refurb K10d back in early 2007 - it's still going nice and strong.

It's entirely up to you.

I don't believe in extended warranties. With the money I've saved in the past twenty years I could probably buy 30 K5's. Invest that money and you will be ahead.

I bought my K10D in May of 2007. Haven't needed to use the warranty yet. Bought a refurbed. K100D in Dec. of 2008. No issues there either.

I like excuses to upgrade: no warranty here.

Why would it be "necessary"?

It is basically an insurance not especially worth having, if it just extends the coverage period. Manufacturing defects are very likely to show up during the regular warranty period anyway.

I'm not sure about cameras specifically - but "extended warranties" on products overall are used less than 5% of the time. It is one of the highest profit products industries sell

Ditto, except it's not 20 years for me yet with Pentax gear. But if I go back to my Dad's gear, we've probably saved enough to buy 40 K-5's instead of spending the $$ on extended warranties. Like my Grandfather used to say - insurance is just a bet that your product is going to fail.

For a camera body that will be outdated in less than a year? No. For a SDM lens? Yes. They have a reputation for failure right after the warranty expires.

Check and see if you camera equipment is covered on your home or renters insurance.
I hate it when things fall off the shelf and need repair....
Why pay extra for something you may all ready have?

I have never gone for extended warranty on any of my gear. To date considering I have shot film since 1981 and digital since 2003 I have had one repair on a film body due to it taking a really hard hit in Disney land when someone tried to swipe it (cost me $40 to fix my KX meter) and one repair to my K10 to fix the shutter out of warranty I have not needed any service on my other 2 film bodies in 30 years or my other two digital bodies (*istD or k7) since

To me I am ahead of the game by a big margin

Rule of thumb: if you can absorb a realized risk without great difficulty it is not worth getting an insurance?

great point. When you consider all the stuff you purchase, how much fails under warranty (not a lot) how much would fail under the extended warranty, (again not a lot) If you took extended warranty on everything you bought, you could get a new camera every year for life with what you would spend.

I've bought almost all of my camera gear used, and as such have never had a warranty.

It hasn't been an issue as of yet, most stuff is well-built enough to rely on, IMO.
